When working hard becomes a way of proving your worth…

For some men, working hard, achieving and always being the one who copes can be more than ambition. It can be a way of feeling valued, earning belonging or protecting against the fear of not being good enough.

Sometimes, these patterns begin in childhood. They can bring success on the outside, while hiding self-doubt, loneliness or a fragile sense of self-worth underneath.

You don’t have to keep proving your worth to deserve it. 💛

In therapy, I help men develop self-esteem, find the courage to be themselves, and build a stronger sense of who they are beyond what they achieve.

You are more than what you do.

If this resonates with you, therapy can offer a space to explore these patterns and begin a different relationship with yourself.

A bench can be more than just a place to sit.

New mental health support benches are being introduced across Devon, carrying a simple but powerful message: “Come Sit With Us.” 🪑💚

Each bench helps connect people with mental health support and reminds us that nobody should have to face difficult times alone.

Sometimes, wellbeing starts with a pause, a conversation or just asking how someone is today:

I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I just knew I wasn’t myself.

I hear this from men in therapy more often than you might think.

For many men, opening up can feel difficult.
Shame. Pressure to cope. Not knowing how to put it into words.

Sometimes you think you’re the only one feeling this way.

Until you talk.

So many men tell me they didn’t realise how helpful talking could be until they did it.

They discovered they weren’t alone — and that there were practical tools and strategies that could help them feel better.

So this World Mental Health Day:

**Listen. Ask. Check in. Make space for men to talk.**

You don’t need to fix someone.
You just need to be there.

And if you’re struggling yourself, you don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong before asking for help.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Sometimes, talking is where things start to change.

🤯 What if therapy isn’t about “fixing” you?

New research published this month in The Lancet Psychiatry has been looking at something therapists see every day: different people benefit from different ingredients of psychological support.

👉Across research involving adults with depression and anxiety, three areas stood out as particularly useful:

💚strengthening social support

🔧learning practical ways to manage problems

⚽️increasing behavioural activation — gradually getting back into meaningful activities rather than waiting to “feel better” first.

The researchers also found that what helps can vary depending on the person and the difficulties they’re experiencing.

👉I think that’s an important reminder that therapy isn’t a formula.

👉You don’t have to arrive knowing exactly what’s wrong with you. You don’t have to have a diagnosis. And you don’t have to fit a particular idea of what therapy “should” look like.

Sometimes the starting point is simply:

“I’m struggling, and I don’t quite know what to do with it.”

✅That’s enough of a reason to talk to someone.
Drop me a message if you’d like a space to talk and support with practical tools to get back on track.

Stress isn’t just something you feel. Your body feels it too.

New research from Imperial College London highlights links between **chronic inflammation, psychological distress and changes to the heart** — reminding us that long-term stress can affect much more than how we feel.

When stress becomes the norm, it’s easy to keep pushing through… telling ourselves we’ll deal with it later.

But you don’t have to wait until you’re overwhelmed to ask for help.

Taking care of your mental health is taking care of you.

If stress is taking up too much space in your life, therapy can offer a space to pause, understand what’s happening and find a different way forward.

💛 September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month

What if we made it easier to say, “I’m not okay”?

For some, shame makes speaking up feel almost impossible. And for many men, the pressure to be strong, cope and carry on can mean suffering in silence.

But you don’t have to have the right words.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
**You just have to start somewhere.**

Talking matters.
Listening without judgement matters.
Compassion matters.

Changing the narrative starts with making it safer to speak.

Sometimes, the bravest words are simply:
“I’m not okay.”💛
