At our Teignmouth hub this month, art and music have played a special part in what we’ve been doing.

Our members visited an art exhibition, which sparked plenty of conversation and memories. We also welcomed Charlotte, a mezzo-soprano, whose singing completely held the room.

Recent research continues to show the value of art, music and cultural activity for brain health. For us at The Ness, that reinforces what we see every day.

A painting can start a conversation.
A familiar piece of music can bring back a memory.
A live performance can lift mood, attention and connection.

But at The Ness, the value is not simply the activity itself. It is the specialist support around it.

Our sessions are shaped by dementia and cognitive health expertise, including Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, known as CST. Activities are enjoyable and social, but they are also chosen with purpose: to support memory, language, confidence, connection and involvement.

Families come to us because they want their loved one to have warm, meaningful days, with the reassurance that the support is thoughtful, specialist and grounded in evidence.

If you are worried about memory changes in yourself or someone close to you, we offer a free introductory session so you can meet the team, see the hub and understand whether The Ness feels right for you.

This was a lovely way to mark Dementia Action Week last week.

Our Teignmouth hub enjoyed a brilliant Ness barbecue, with members and staff spending time together.

There was good food, plenty of chat, lots of laughter and even the sun came out for the occasion.

Simple moments like this matter. Time together, feeling included and enjoying ordinary social moments are all part of what makes life at the hub so important.

A really special afternoon at Teignmouth.

When someone you love is living with memory loss or dementia, it can be hard to know what to do in everyday situations.

The repeated questions.
The changes in mood.
The conversations that do not go as expected.
The worry that you are helping too much, or not enough.

Our Family Dementia Training Afternoon is designed to help families understand what may be happening and learn practical ways to respond at home.

Led by Jonathan Hanbury, Founder and CEO of Ness Care Group, the session will include time for questions and real-life examples.

Tip 5 for Dementia Action Week

Support does not mean giving up independence.

During Dementia Action Week, it is easy to talk about awareness, diagnosis and services.

But for many people and families, the real worry is much more personal.

“What will this mean for daily life?”
“Will I still be able to make my own choices?”
“Are we doing the right thing by asking for help?”

Asking for support can feel like a big step.

For the person living with memory changes, it may feel like admitting something is wrong.

For families, it may bring guilt, worry or uncertainty.

But the right support is not about taking over.

It is about helping someone stay active, connected and independent for as long as possible.

It can help build routine.
It can support confidence.
It can create social connection.
It can give families reassurance.
It can make day-to-day life feel less lonely.

At The Ness Care Group, our Memory Hubs in Exmouth, Teignmouth, Chudleigh and Kingsteignton provide clinically led dementia and cognitive health support for individuals and families.

Our work is warm, fun, specialist and built around helping people keep more of themselves for longer.

That is what meaningful dementia support should do.

Keeping the brain active does not have to feel like a test.

It can be a song, a story, a familiar photo, a word game or a conversation about a favourite holiday.

For people living with memory changes, gentle activities can help encourage recall, confidence, communication and connection.

The key is to keep it relaxed.

Not “What do you remember?”
More “What does this make you think of?”

At The Ness, our activities are chosen with care and shaped by specialist dementia and cognitive health expertise.

Small moments can still do important work.

Loneliness and isolation can have a real impact on wellbeing and brain health.

When someone is experiencing memory changes, they may start to feel less confident socially. They might avoid groups, stop going out as much, or worry about joining conversations.

But this is often the time when connection matters most.

A chat, a shared activity, a local group, a walk with someone, or simply being around familiar people can help support confidence, mood and mental stimulation.

Staying connected does not have to mean doing something big. Small, regular moments of connection can make a difference.

What helps you or someone you care about feel more connected?

19/05/2026

A sense of purpose matters.

We all tend to do better when we feel useful, needed or connected to something meaningful. Funny that humans need meaning and not just tea and Wi-Fi, but here we are.

For our second brain health tip this Dementia Action Week, we’re talking about purpose.

That could be caring for the garden, helping with a local group, volunteering, looking after a pet, making something, or simply having a role in everyday family life.

Purpose does not have to be big. It just needs to feel meaningful.

What gives you, or someone you care about, a sense of purpose?

18/05/2026

For Dementia Action Week, we’re sharing simple tips for looking after brain health.

Tip 1: give your brain something new to do.

It is easy to slip into autopilot. Same routine, same habits, same old conversations about the weather, because apparently Britain signed a national contract.

But our brains need gentle challenge.

Try learning something new, playing a word game, reading something different, joining a group, singing, gardening, or simply changing your usual routine.

Small changes can help keep the brain active.

What could you try this week?
