Volunteering in Health Registered Charity: 1182615 We offer practical and emotional support to the people who need it most in Teignmouth, Dawlish and Chudleigh.

Wellbeing charity focused on supporting, connecting and empowering the communities in and around Teignmouth, Dawlish and Chudleigh to live happily and independently. This is mainly volunteer-led. We offer transport to medical appointments, befriending, memory support, and more.

Community Transport week is coming to a close and we’ve really enjoyed shining a light on the amazing volunteers who support so many people in the community get to their vital medical appointments.

Last year our transport team supported 994 people, covering 20,986 miles and gave 1,764 of volunteer hours!

Our driver Malcolm shared his thoughts on his volunteering role:

"I started volunteering to give something back to my community, but I get just as much from it as the people I help. The conversations, friendships, and knowing I've made someone's day a little easier make it truly worthwhile."

Day 4 of Community Transport week 🚗 🚙

Our lovely volunteer driver Cheryl has been with Volunteering in Health for about 2 years and really enjoys supporting the local community.

"I enjoy the drives as it’s helping people to get to their hospital appointments. Taxis are so expensive too, Volunteering in Health is half the price for the elderly.

You meet such interesting people on your drive, the experiences of the elderly are very often forgotten…… some in the war….. some ballerinas I’ve met & some just trying to cope on their own.

If You help others it helps yourself ….. so the saying goes…. But it is sooo true.

We are excited to share that the Cliffden Buddies have been shortlisted for a Stars of Teignbridge award 👏

The buddies are a group of volunteer sighted guides who accompany visually impaired guests staying at the Cliffden Hotel to enjoy many different trips and activities whilst they are visiting our wonderful area.

Founded by Jules Griffen in 2023, the team now have around 20 sighted guides who volunteer.

Volunteering in Health are proud to support and partner with this amazing team.

Our Community Car scheme would not be possible without the dedication and support of our amazing volunteer team.

Dave is one of our Chudleigh team and regularly takes clients to their medical and healthcare appointments.

Thanks to Dave, and all of our amazing team - both those out on the road and taking the bookings in the office.

Our Community Car scheme provides an essential service for local residents who would otherwise struggle to get to their vital medical appointments.

We have an amazing team of volunteer drivers but we still find that we are turning away some requests every week as we just don't have enough drivers to meet the demand for this service.

It's day 2 of Community Transport week and we continue to celebrate the amazing contribution of our volunteer drivers who keep the wheels turning on our Community Car scheme.

Judi joined Volunteering in Health at the start of 2026 and told us how she feels about being part of the VIH transport team.

"I really enjoy being a driver for Volunteering in Health. Aside from the interesting people we meet and being able to help local people get to important medical appointments, it is very flexible. I can volunteer for days when it suits my diary and can drive as much as time and other commitments allow. Our clients are very grateful it provides a cost effective and trusted service for their medical needs.

I would highly recommend becoming a volunteer driver for this much needed and much appreciated service "

We're celebrating Community Transport Week by shining the spotlight on some of our amazing drivers!

Pete joined us at the end of 2025 and shared his thoughts on his volunteer driver role with Volunteering in Health

"I really enjoy being a volunteer driver because I meet some lovely people who just need a little help to get to appointments. It is very rewarding to make a small difference to someone’s day by making it easy for them to attend hospital, the dentist or whatever it may be.
The role of volunteer driver is really flexible, fitting around other commitments, but the impact it has on the lives of the clients is immeasurable, and I am very pleased to be part of such a worthwhile service."

🌟 We're supporting Community Transport Week 2026! 🌟

Community Transport is more than just a journey from A to B. It provides a lifeline for people who might otherwise struggle to access healthcare, services, and social connections.

This week, we will be celebrating our amazing volunteer drivers and transport team who generously give their time to help local people attend medical appointments and remain active within their community.
