Funky Friday Inclusive Discos are held monthly at The Navy Club, Bellman's Yard, High Street, Newport TF10 7AJ. The are social events aimed at getting young people aged 15 years plus with additional needs mixing, chatting and dancing. The idea is to give these young people the opportunity to have a typical night out with friends and family. Organiser Val Edgley of Newport says “I have been wanting
to put on an event like for a long time. There is real gap in social opportunities for young people with disabilities in Telford & Wrekin, especially once they get over the age of 25. Also there are lots of group activities during the week but nothing at the weekend. We think our young people should be able to go out on a Friday night and socialise like any other teenager or young adult.”
Parent Helen says “It’s really important for young people with disabilities to mix with others and learn social skills and how to act when they go out. Funky Friday gives them the opportunity to do this, rather than sitting at home by themselves, gaming or watching TV.”
Parent Sandra says “I like the idea they can get active and dance. My son James loves dancing and could dance for hours!”

Funky Friday really appreciates the support we have been given by The Navy Club in Newport. It’s a great venue with a stage for the DJs, a dance floor and a bar. Plus there is a separate room where parents and carers can sit and chat if they want. The music is provided by Music Mix DJs – they are great guys and really responsive to the requests for songs from the young people. They enjoy adapting the music for themed discos like Halloween and Christmas. Funky Friday takes place (usually) on 3rd Friday of every month @ The Navy Club, Bellman’s Yard.
