From student to teacher, Peer Support Volunteer Alison enjoyed her lipreading classes so much she then trained as a lipreading teacher!

“I found the classes extremely useful in showing me lip patterns, how the English language works, and how vital the context of a conversation is to help me lipread.

“I found meeting others 'in the same boat' interesting, delightful, and empowering."

With all that talent and skill, Alison promises it was "more luck than judgement" that helped her once on a pub quiz.

Lipreading is more than watching lips 👄

It uses visual cues from facial expressions, context, and body language to understand speech and developing these skills can help you to feel more confident.

Peer Support Volunteer, Sylvia, shares:

“Discovering lipreading classes not only provided me with an essential communication tool, but an awareness of Hearing Link Services, and the value of becoming a peer support volunteer.

“It was therapeutic to be able to share experiences of hearing loss and laugh at some of them in a supportive environment.

“Despite deteriorating hearing, I’ve become more resilient and able to manage social situations in a more pragmatic way.

"It takes practice to develop the skill of lipreading, but so worthwhile along with assistive devices and strategies to minimise the impact of hearing loss and its inherent isolation.”

Lipreading courses can be essential rehabilitation for anyone who has lost some or all of their hearing. Therefore the Government should fund access to them and ensure they are classified as health and wellbeing courses rather than leisure activities, to recognise their importance.

They can teach communication skills, coping in noise, problem solving, understanding hearing aids and the ear, and managing tinnitus.
