Today we visited our local Asian shop to buy some seeds, and on the shelf with different types of salt we spotted something called Chinese salt. Of course we got curious — and after checking the label we were honestly shocked. It wasn’t salt at all, but monosodium glutamate (MSG).

So right between healthy products like Himalayan salt and black salt, there was a packet of “Chinese salt”… which can easily mislead people into thinking it’s another natural option. It isn’t.

Just a reminder: MSG is a flavour enhancer used to make food taste stronger and more appealing. It’s extremely common in takeaways and restaurants. Around 1.5 million tonnes of MSG are added to food worldwide every year.

MSG can stimulate appetite, and it’s believed to cross the blood–brain barrier, allowing heavy metals to enter and accumulate in the brain. High levels may overstimulate the brain, potentially contributing to ADHD and other neurodegenerative conditions.

We genuinely had no idea that MSG is also sold under the name Chinese salt.
So if you want to avoid it, always check the labels — even in the “healthy” section.

Our early morning walk today showed how the recent drought has brought signs of early autumn. I used to hate autumn and winter — the end of August always felt sad, knowing summer was slipping away. I never liked long, dark evenings.
But over the last two years something has shifted. I’ve started feeling excited about mushroom season, and I’ve found real pleasure in walking in the dark when there are no people around.
I realised the world is so dynamic — no day, month, or year is ever the same. Time flies so fast that there’s no point wasting it on sadness; it always passes. I have no idea how the dry weather will affect mushrooms this year, but I feel genuinely excited to see the leaves falling, changing colours, and to look for mushrooms beneath them.I’m excited about quiet walks in the darkness, without groups of youngsters or screaming children around. I never thought I would say this. And I’m truly looking forward to running my first mushroom walk on 18 October.
