This week is Mental Health Awareness week, an annual campaign close to our hearts that takes place in May and is led by the .
This year’s theme is “Action” - encouraging us to take practical, everyday steps to safeguard our mental wellbeing.
As someone who professionally traverses the continuum of wellbeing on a daily basis - as a Clinical Psychologist I work primarily with endlessly inspiring neurodiverse young people, and having birthed La-Eva coming up to a decade ago - I am passionate about what keeps us well in good times and in tough ones.
Simple acts of self-compassion hold the fort. They oppose the cycles that we are drawn into when life unfolds in painful ways. They create a protective halo around us. They release little bursts of chemicals in our bodies such as oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin, which in turn help to balance out our stress responses to the ordinary and extraordinary times we go through.
To have a meaningful impact, simple, ritualistic acts of self-compassion have to be repeated, again and again. They have to be an integral part of daily life.
It could be many other things, but in this case, enter soap and lotion. Cleansing, nourishing drawing on the healing properties of art and pure, fragrant ingredients created by Mother Nature.
La-Eva ultimately is about wellbeing in the day to day. What we wash off the days with, and how we nurture our skin, the filter between our internal and external worlds, matters. Daily rituals soothe us, revive us, and connect us with ourselves, body and mind as one.

La-Eva’s founder, Dr Louisa Canham, is a practicing Clinical Psychologist specialising in complex child and adolescent mental health. Having completed her doctorate at Oxford University in her early 20s, Louisa has worked for over 25 years in schools, hospitals, inpatient units and prisons. Her transition from the clinic to the studio has led to a specialist interest in the potent impact of of self care and aesthetic experiences on nervous system regulation and wellbeing.
