🌸 Saturday thoughts from the therapy room 🌸
This is me.
17 years old. And a mum.
I was thinking about this today and about how we sometimes look back at our younger selves and judge them with the knowledge, experience and perspective we have now.
And I don't think that's always fair.
Because she didn't have all that.
She was 17.
She was still growing up herself, still learning about life, relationships, emotions, responsibility and who she was, whilst also trying to figure out how to be a mum.
Being a teenage mum is hard.
And looking at this photograph now, 30 years later, I can see how young I actually was.
But at the time?
I didn't feel particularly young.
I was a mum. I had responsibilities. I had to get on with things.
And I think that's something we can forget when we look back at ourselves.
The us now know what happened next; we know the mistakes we made; we know the things we'd do differently.
But our younger selves didn't.
They were making decisions with the information, experience and emotional maturity they had at that point in their lives.
My younger children have known a very different version of me.
They've known me older. More experienced. More confident. Hopefully a little wiser.
They didn't know this girl.
And sometimes I think we need to look back at the younger versions of ourselves in the same way we'd look at any young person who was trying their best.
With a bit more compassion.
Rather than:
“Goodness me, what was I thinking?!
Maybe:
“You know what? You were doing your best."
Because you were.
So if you find yourself looking back at something your younger self did and cringing -
Be kinder to them.
They didn't know then what you know now 🫶🧡
