In hospital rheumatology departments and at home, supportive seating makes daily activities safer and more manageable, conserving energy throughout the day.

For people with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases, choosing the right chair can improve posture, support inflamed joints, and reduce pain during flare-ups.

In this article we explore key seating features for people with rheumatic conditions 👉 https://ow.ly/ITh650Z3eJs

In recent years we’ve heard a lot about deconditioning and the detrimental impact of prolonged bedrest.

So much so, you could be forgiven for thinking this has only come to light in recent times through delays in hospital discharge.

But it turns out this was recognised a lot longer ago than you might have thought.

Dr Samuel Levine, a renowned American cardiologist who diagnosed President Roosevelt with polio, published a number of articles in the 1950s showing that sitting patients in a chair was a more effective form of recovery than bedrest, reducing mortality rates by 5%.

His thesis on the ‘cardiac chair’ in 1951 advocated a “contrary method of cardiac care, i.e., to keep the patient in an appropriate chair with the feet down for as much of the day as is comfortable.”

This was slow to be accepted by the medical establishment, countering the traditional view that convalescence and bed rest was the best form of healing for the heart.

Slowly though, Levine’s approach began to gain traction and became a factor in the national decline in coronary heart disease mortality that began in 1968.

So we are indebted to Dr Levine for pioneering this approach, but in terms of an “appropriate chair” there is so much more to choose from to provide the best comfort and recovery for the patient.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme this year is: Action 🌟

There are lots of things we can do to take action to improve our mental health, whether this is talking to a friend, doing something relaxing, or just getting out in nature. 🌻

As seating specialists, we see this same principle in operation when it comes to specifying chairs for our clients.

❌ Poor seating, makeshift cushions, uncomfortable postures etc. become the ‘norm’, which just perpetuate discomfort and reduce quality of life.
✅ Comfortable seating should be the benchmark, which underlies every seating assessment and decision we make.

❌ Hospital wards are still putting up with hard, uncomfortable ward chairs, which discourage patients from sitting out and getting mobile again, keeping them in bed and at risk of deconditioning.
✅ Getting patients into a comfortable chair with ergonomic support like the HiBack Bedside Chair is the incentive for patients to mobilise early, speeding up recovery times.

As we see time and again in seating, it’s the desire to regain comfort and challenge the status quo that drives decision-making and ultimately leads to the best outcomes in terms of improved posture, mobility and quality of life.

If you know someone who is struggling with their current seating, take action today by getting in touch and we’ll take things from there!
