For our last session before the summer break, I’ve been asked to include something for shoulders. I wanted to do something a little different so we will start with a few simple drills that work on the brachial plexus, reducing neural tension in this area and which also stabilise the pelvis and challenge proprioception and balance.

We can approach them in a playful way and as they are ‘movement snacks’ they’re perfect to practice at home.

Then some more familiar asanas, ending with some gentle movements to release tension.

No need for props other than your blocks.

Yoga this week: building stability from the feet up. We’ll start with some stretches for ankles and calves then moving into some familiar poses.

Please bring two large towels or two blankets that can be made into a firm tube.

Next week, we will take a slow and structured approach to Shoulderstand, sometimes called the Queen of Asanas. We can approach this pose in a staged way where there’s an option to stop at any of the stages and still receive the benefits of being upside down.

Just what are those benefits? The physiological benefits are many, ranging from the circulation system to the lymphatic system, to better digestion. Mental benefits include improved focus and experiencing a sense of letting go and calmness.

It’s said that to get the best out of an inversion it’s necessary to stay 3-5 minutes. The good news is that doesn’t have to be in the full pose but can be in a simple variation such as lying with our calves resting on the seat of a chair.

Please bring a thick blanket (or couple of blankets), so that when folded to a size large enough to support the upper back, it is 2-3 inches thick. 🙏 🙃

Next week we’ll strengthen glutes, hips and core while playing with some novel (and fun) transitions between our familiar asanas, challenging balance and coordination. There’ll be an option of keeping one hand on the wall or a chair if balance is an issue.
See you on Thursday! 🙏 🧘‍♀️

Next week’s practice (back to Thursday as usual) will be focused on the abdomen. In yoga, there’s an energy called tejas, which is responsible for our ‘inner fire’ and which lives in the abdomen. Yogis say that by awakening this energy we become inspired, creative, enthusiastic and courageous.

We will work with asana, the breath, bandha and mudra to stimulate the abdomen and bring clarity and light to the mind.
