Molly, an 8.5-year-old black Labrador, had a long history of recurrent ear infections. In January 2026, despite antibiotic treatment, Pseudomonas, known for rapid antibiotic resistance, was residing deep within Molly’s ear canal. She was referred to a specialist practice for definitive surgical removal of the diseased ear canal, a procedure used as a last resort when other treatments have failed.

Three days after surgery, Molly returned for evaluation, and it was found that the wound had broken down and reopened. It would ordinarily have been re-stitched; however, cultures from the middle ear confirmed the re-appearance of the multi-drug-resistant Pseudomonas, which was resistant to all antibiotics tested. Re-suturing was impossible due to the infection.

The only remaining options discussed were euthanasia or wound management, which involved repeated anaesthesia for wound flushing, and manuka honey packing. By day nine post-surgery, there were serious concerns regarding her prognosis.

At this point I was asked in by the senior vet to help. Molly was offered oils with documented activity against Pseudomonas. She responded most strongly to garlic, and then to oregano. These were added to green clay and applied locally at regular intervals. Spirulina was also offered to support immune regulation.

The infection cleared within a week. In just over 2.5 weeks the wound was just about completely healed. Typically, final wound closure clear of infection takes (Weeks 6–12+). Some cases extend to 3–4 months. The senior vet is now going to start training in Applied Zoopharmacognosy.

See more details of this case and photos on my web with a timeline showing the wound healing: These pictures would not be able to be shown on Instagram as they are too graphic.

STUDY FINDS RAW-FED DOGS HAVE LESS E.COLI THAN DRY-FED DOGS
Pyotmetra is a nasty, potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that causes it to fill with bacteria and pus. You don't want it. But they're still not sure how it arises. The most accepted hypothesis is that bacteria creep up from the intestinal tract as extraintestinal (occurring outside the intestines) infection of pathogenic Escherichia coli is the most frequent pathogen, accounting for 57–100% of cases.

They wanted to learn more so they swabbed the uterine and re**al areas of 72 bi***es with pyometra. For their control (something to compare them to where you might find normal results), they swabbed 53 bi***es without pyo that were dry-fed and 38 bi***es without pyo that were raw-fed.

Crucially, they found A LOWER GROWTH RATE of E. coli was observed in dogs fed a raw diet than in those fed commercial dry feed.

In fact, they detected 130 different strains of E.coli from the faeces of dogs fed dry food and just 85 from the faeces dogs fed a raw meat-based diet.

"The present study suggests that intestinal colonization by certain types of E. coli could be a risk factor for the occurrence of E. coli pyometra in bi***es and that diet can influence intestinal colonization by such strains."

Well now, isn't that interesting.

Next time your dry food spokesperson goes on about safety, make sure to share the study below with them!

A few more of these sorts of studies, coupled with the enormous safety studies we already have, and they won't be able to go on about safety much longer (with a straight face) and will move on to the next terror. It used to be nutrition, then balance now safety. It WILL be something else tmrw because charming companies like Mars really, really, really like selling cereal-based pet food...and health care plans, for some reason...

More than 30 veterinary surgeon have signed a letter in the current issue of 'Veterinary Record' drawing attention to the health risks involved with routine neutering of dogs, a procedure that until recently was considered fairly harmless. Now we know better. It turns out that neutering a healthy dog can increase the risk of him or her developing cancer, allergies, thyroid disease, arthritis, ligament disease and a long list of other serious health problems.

Hello everyone

I hope that you all enjoyed your Christmas however you chose to spend it and that your dogs had a wonderful time ripping the paper from their presents!

I would also like to take a moment to remember the souls who travelled on to the next life this year, both four and two legged. For those left here there is a period of mourning and adapting, but those who have transitioned are never too far away from us and we can take solace from that as we move forward.πŸ’œβ€οΈβ€πŸ©ΉπŸ’

I wish you all a
🎊 Happy, Healthy New Year πŸŽ‰
that brings you much peace and joy.

Although it may look as though I have been quiet for the last couple of months, a lot has been going on behind the scenes!
I have closed my shop in Cullompton with a view to semi retirement. Those who know me will be aware that I have been hobbling around for a while.... well πŸ₯ .....just had a hip replacement and am currently at home recuperating and planning!!
I should be back on my feet and racing around from early December πŸŽ‰

I am offering telephone consults / advice for basic training, healing etc while I am recovering and by December will be able to offer consults for behaviour / training in person.

I help with basic puppy training through to more complex issues and re educating older dogs.
My approach is always to work with your dog and you to gently and carefully help to reduce confrontation and stress. To help you understand how to help your dog to cope and thrive as part of your family.

New plans are afoot for the New Year, so watch this space!

I love this quote as it applies equally to us and our dogs :

"Beneath every behaviour there is a need.
And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behaviour, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom"
(Ashleigh Warner)

Hi All, as many of you will know I am retiring from full time grooming at the end of August.

I am continuing to offer training & behaviour sessions in your own home. From teaching puppies to helping older dogs who are struggling with behaviour problems. I work in a very holistic and calm way to give confidence and understanding and help dogs work out for themselves how to behave in a way that fits in with their family.

I would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and my grooming business over the last 15 years in Cullompton and trusted me with their canine family members. These dogs have taught me so much and I have had some wonderful experiences with them, especially those who were so scared to be groomed but over time calmly trusted me to trim them 🫢

I am looking forward to being able to have a dog of my own again soon, possibly in the spring and am hoping to do a podcast of our progress together. (warts & all!)...so keep watching!

If you need help, you can reach me by email or my mobile phone.

Had a great time this afternoon helping a super puppy and his guardian with a couple of training issues. Sometimes it is just small changes we need to make in the way we interact with our dogs that make all the difference. πŸΎπŸΆπŸ’–
