Here I am, doing my best to be positive but I have to be honest at times it’s tough. I’m nearly half way through my 6 weeks of minimal weight bearing now. I’ve had my dressing off and am pleased to say my scar is healing really well. I was able to shower again after that woohoo! 🥳

Then yesterday I had my first physio session. I was hoping to be able to really push myself and was thinking I’d be ready for some resistance exercises but nope, advised body weight is enough for now. And actually once I was given permission to start abducting my leg out to the side again, I realised how weak those muscles had got in such a short amount of time. I need to practice turning my hip joint into internal and external rotation too but external especially is horrible. Either due to inflammation or ligament damage or even tissue memory of the trauma, I burst into tears as soon as I tried it this morning. So I will work on this very tentatively and keep you posted.
I’m so determined to get as much mobility back as I can but I need to take my own advice and listen to my body.

I’m looking forward to my next appointment with my osteopath friend Dan who has made me realise what a benefit very early post-op osteopathy treatment can be. I refer quite a few patients for hip replacement and will definitely be adapting how I manage them osteopathically to support them more now through their journey.

Right…time to do some more exercises! 🦵🏼

Crutches 🤪😱🫤 essential, freedom and independence giving but blinking hard work!

I spent the first couple of days after the op having to rely on a frame but was very happy once I was able to progress to crutches.

I’m lucky being young(ish!) and reasonably fit but having to put all my weight through one leg, my glutes especially tired initially after just 30 seconds.

And then the pressure through my shoulder girdles - wow! I keep having to remind myself to pull my shoulders back and down, and stand up straight. Going up stairs is the hardest on them as 80% my weight is put onto one crutch. And thinking about the position of my arm that’s on the hand rail so that I don’t strain my acromioclavicular joint or rotator cuff muscles.

My hands after a couple of minutes walking feel it also. Resisting the temptation to try to carry something with a finger or two as this upsets the weight distribution across my palm. Now where’s my backpack….! 🎒

On the plus side ✨ I’ve noticed areas strengthening as a result. I can stand for longer periods before tiring now and my hip isn’t dropping so much - so where I’m losing muscle mass on the injured side due to rest I’m bulking on the right 😆 I will have a very funny shaped butt after all of this! And as long as I’m really careful about my form, surely I will come out of this with stronger shoulders?! My balance on my right leg is noticeably improving and so the proprioceptive feedback mechanism is certainly benefiting. I also feel my core engage more as I manoeuvre at the moment - all elements to embrace and then bear in mind when I get to rehab properly and bring the weaker side back up to strength.

I am a week in after my accident and having this ‘2 screw dynamic hip screw’ fitted the same day. I could have opted for a total hip replacement but the surgeon felt I had a good chance of being able to save my own.

The danger of the fracture I had is that there is a very limited blood supply to the head of the femur. We hope that this has been preserved and not damaged too much. Time will tell. In the meantime it’s a good excuse to eat 85% dark chocolate each day which has been proven to promote angiogenesis (growth of blood vessels)! 🍫

I have a 4” wound on the side of my leg which is surprisingly to me, the most painful area at the moment. My actual hip is somewhat restricted but let’s face it, there is likely a fair amount of inflammation and swelling that is going to take time to go down. I don’t really have any awareness of the metal, in fact it’s strange to imagine it’s in there.

I have advised to put less than 50% weight through that leg for 6 weeks until reassessed so it’s crutches everywhere at the moment - that’s another post in itself…

UNFORTUNATE TEMPORARY CLINIC CLOSURE
So the lesson I learned today??? Don’t slip over and break your hip! 🫣

Truro hospital has been fantastic tho. They operated this afternoon and i now have pins and a plate. The doctors and nurses are so kind.

But this does of course mean my clinic is closed for a few weeks. I shall be in touch personally with my patients to cancel and refund.

Thank you for your patience and understanding 🫶🏼

Two patients contacted me yesterday to let me know that following my examination and diagnosis of severe OA they are now on the list for hip replacements. I’m so pleased that they will get the treatment they need and soon be able to enjoy being pain free.

Hip pain often refers to other areas of the body due to the compensations a patient adopts around their pain or restriction, meaning the real cause of their problems is not always picked up straight away. A letter to their GP asking for an x-ray and I am able to get the wheels in motion for them.

Discovered this morning that a voucher had for a climb at Chimera was about to expire so we went and all had a go! Lots of fun, I’m sure we’ll do it again. Defo woke up some muscles that haven’t been used for a while!

It’s so important to move our bodies….

To keep strong, maintain coordination and lubrication of our joints. Keep fluids flowing - to encourage thorough distribution of nutrients to each cell, to remove damaging inflammatory factors. To burn the fuel that we are eating and reduce weight gain.

Find something you enjoy and do it!

Walk, run, swim, cycle, dance, garden!
Just have fun!
