That PRX-PLUS glow ✨

This patient is part of my Maverick Glow Regenerate programme, with treatments every six weeks as part of an ongoing plan to improve and maintain her skin quality.

Her programme includes a combination of treatments, with PRX-PLUS being a more recent addition. This was her second PRX-PLUS treatment, six weeks after her first.

These photographs show her skin before and after her most recent treatment — and I think the glow speaks for itself. ✨

She’s been really pleased with how her skin is progressing — and so am I.

Maverick Glow isn’t about relying on one treatment to do everything. Treatments are selected and rotated according to the skin and what we’re trying to achieve.

Consistent treatments. A considered plan. Healthy-looking skin.

Your cells have their own recycling system. ♻️

It’s called autophagy — and it’s one of the processes that helps our cells clear damaged material and keep functioning normally.

As we age, that process can become less efficient. That’s why impaired, or “disabled”, macroautophagy is now recognised as one of the hallmarks of ageing.

But this is also an area surrounded by claims — particularly around fasting, supplements and “boosting autophagy”.

The reality? The biology is fascinating, but the human evidence is still developing. Exercise has some of the strongest human evidence for influencing autophagy-related pathways; fasting may influence them too, but we don’t yet have evidence for a magic number of fasting hours that will slow human ageing. And supplements marketed as “autophagy activators”? The claims are currently well ahead of the clinical evidence.

Sometimes the science is less exciting than the marketing. But it’s considerably more useful. 💜

Save this one if you’d like to come back to it.

Evidence first. Always.

That last line before the save is particularly you. It gives the series a point of view without sounding preachy or anti-longevity.

And I’d keep hashtags restrained:

This weekend was a lovely reminder that learning in aesthetics doesn’t stop when the training course ends. 💜

I spent the weekend working alongside a fellow nurse and aesthetic practitioner, focusing not simply on injection technique, but on the clinical thinking that sits behind good aesthetic practice — facial assessment, treatment planning, product choice, safe practice and knowing when not to treat.

For me, confidence doesn’t come from collecting certificates. It develops through experience, reflection, asking questions and having someone you trust to talk things through with.

That’s the thinking behind Maverick Clinical Mentorship — sharing the experience I’ve gained over many years in healthcare and aesthetics to support other practitioners as they develop their own clinical confidence and judgement.

And importantly, mentorship shouldn’t finish when the clinic day does.

More to come… 💜

What happens when our cells stop clearing up the rubbish? 🧬

It might not sound glamorous, but our cells have their own housekeeping system — constantly making, folding, repairing and clearing away proteins.

This process is called proteostasis, and it’s another of the recognised hallmarks of ageing.

As we get older, this quality-control system becomes less efficient. Damaged or misfolded proteins can accumulate, affecting how our cells function — including the cells involved in maintaining healthy skin.

So, can we do anything about it?

The evidence still comes back to some decidedly unglamorous basics: regular exercise, good nutrition, adequate protein and good-quality sleep.

And despite some very persuasive longevity marketing, there is currently no treatment or supplement proven to simply restore proteostasis or reverse this hallmark of ageing.

That distinction matters.

Promising science is exciting.
But promising isn’t the same as proven.

What if some of the ageing we see on the outside actually starts years earlier — inside our cells? 🧬

Telomeres are one small part of a much bigger ageing story.

They protect the ends of our chromosomes, but over time they can become shorter — influenced not only by age, but by factors including oxidative stress, inflammation and lifestyle.

And this is where it gets interesting.

Because the science of ageing increasingly points us away from looking for one miracle treatment, supplement or “anti-ageing” fix.

Instead, it’s about understanding the biological processes that change over time — and which of those we may actually be able to influence.

That’s why I’m working through the Hallmarks of Ageing in this series.

Not because we can stop ageing.

But because there’s a big difference between simply getting older and understanding how we might support healthier ageing.

Next up: another hallmark — and another piece of the puzzle.

No needles. No peeling. No hiding away. ✨

This is my client immediately after PRX Plus — a treatment designed to stimulate the skin without needles or the peeling traditionally associated with chemical peels.

There may be some temporary redness, but for most people it’s a treatment that fits easily into everyday life — you can simply get on with your day.

PRX Plus is one of the treatments I use within my Maverick Glow Series, where different regenerative and skin-stimulating treatments are carefully rotated over time, rather than relying on one treatment to do everything.

Because great skin isn’t about a quick fix. It’s about improving skin quality over time. 💜

Most people think LED therapy simply shines coloured light onto the skin.

In reality, the science is much more interesting.

Red and near-infrared light are absorbed by structures inside our cells called mitochondria. These are responsible for producing the energy our cells need to function, repair and regenerate.

As we age, mitochondrial function naturally declines. This is one reason researchers are so interested in photobiomodulation—not only for skin rejuvenation, but for its wider effects on cellular health.

In clinic, I use a professional medical-grade LED system because the wavelength, power output and treatment dose are carefully controlled to deliver a consistent treatment.

It’s another example of why I always look beyond the marketing and focus on the science.

🧬 Why do we seem to have less energy as we get older?

It’s a question I hear surprisingly often.

Many people assume it’s simply “getting older”, but there’s much more going on beneath the surface.

Inside almost every cell are tiny structures called mitochondria—often described as the power stations of our cells. As we age, they become less efficient, which may contribute to changes in our energy, recovery and even the way our skin ages.

The encouraging news is that while we can’t stop ageing, we can influence how we age. Everyday habits such as exercise, good nutrition, quality sleep and not smoking all help support healthier mitochondria.

In this week’s Evidence with Melanie, I explain mitochondrial dysfunction in simple, evidence-based terms.

Sometimes the best treatment is no treatment at all.

I know that might sound strange coming from someone who offers aesthetic treatments, but it’s true.

If I don’t believe a treatment is right for you, I’ll tell you.

Sometimes there’s a better option.
Sometimes waiting is the right decision.
Sometimes spending your money elsewhere will give you a better outcome.

I’d rather earn your trust than make a sale.

That’s how I’ve always practised as a nurse, and it’s exactly how I practise in aesthetics.

💜 Evidence first. Always.

How much thought goes into your aesthetic consultation?

A consultation isn’t just about deciding what treatment you’d like to have.

It’s about understanding your concerns, discussing the options available, explaining the benefits and risks, answering your questions, and making sure you have the information you need to make an informed decision.

As a Registered Nurse and Independent Prescriber, I believe obtaining valid informed consent is one of our most important legal and ethical responsibilities.

That’s why my consultations are never about pressure—they’re about partnership.

Every consultation is centred around you, your goals, your safety and your confidence.

If you’re considering aesthetic treatment and would like honest, evidence-based advice, you can book a New Patient Consultation via the link in my bio.
