What is Lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a chronic, progressive condition that causes an abnormal build-up of fat, most commonly in the legs and sometimes the arms. A key feature is that the feet and hands are usually unaffected, creating a distinct appearance.
It almost exclusively affects women and is often linked to hormonal changes such as: • Puberty • Pregnancy • Menopause
Unlike typical weight gain, lipoedema fat is caused by diseased fat cells and is often resistant to diet and exercise. This means many women struggle for years, feeling frustrated when healthy lifestyle changes don't produce the expected results.
Because it is frequently mistaken for obesity or simple weight gain, many people remain undiagnosed and unsupported for far too long.
Awareness matters. Early recognition can help individuals access the right support, management strategies, and improve quality of life.
