With this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme focused on “taking action”, we’re sharing practical ways to support meaningful conversations at work - helping to reduce stigma and ensure people can access the right support when they need it.

Starting a conversation about mental health can feel daunting, but with the right guidance, line managers can approach these discussions with confidence, empathy, and understanding.

In this month’s blog we explore:

• The importance of encouraging open conversations
• How line managers can approach mental health discussions
• How occupational health services can provide support

With research showing that up to half of employees don’t feel supported to discuss their mental health at work, it’s essential that line managers feel equipped to have these conversations early and effectively.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, yet many people are still unaware of the key symptoms or the importance of early detection.

In our latest blog, we highlight practical steps organisations can take to help people seek support sooner:

• Increase awareness of key signs and symptoms
• Encourage participation in NHS screening programmes
• Offer onsite health checks
• Provide resources to support healthier lifestyle choices
• Create a culture where people feel safe to talk openly

Early detection truly matters. In 2025 alone, we processed 4,012 bowel screening kits, leading to 109 GP referrals. Because symptoms can often be mistaken for other benign conditions, proactive screening plays a vital role.

From 15 minute wellbeing checks to full 60 minute assessments, our services are designed to make health support simple, approachable and genuinely meaningful.

🔎 Reducing workplace stress isn’t just good for people - it’s good for business too!

Unmanaged stress can lead to increased absence, reduced productivity, and long-term impacts on employee wellbeing. That’s why a proactive approach matters.

A stress risk assessment is one of the most effective tools organisations can use to identify risks early and take meaningful action to reduce workplace stress before it escalates.

In our latest blog, we explore:
• What a stress risk assessment is
• The Health & Safety Executive Management Standards framework
• When and how to carry out an assessment
• The role of occupational health and EAP support in early intervention

This isn’t just about compliance - it’s about prevention, culture, and protecting your people.

Optima Health are proud to partner with Life at Serco UK as part of the new fully unified Armed Forces Recruitment Service (AFRS) replacing the separate schemes that are currently run by the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.

Going live in January 2027, the service will create a streamlined, single-entry point to attract diverse talent and modernise Armed Forces recruitment, making it faster, simpler, and more accessible. As part of this service, Optima Health will provide medical screening and assessment services to candidates from 16 clinics across the country. Clinics will be located in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Leicester, Norwich, Bristol, Cardiff, Plymouth, Havant, Woking, London (x2) and Belfast and will provide modern clinical facilities specifically designed to carry out the high volume of candidate assessments required.

While we sincerely hope that many of the clinicians and support staff currently providing medical assessment services to the Armed Forces will wish to continue doing so, we recognise that additional staff will be required to support the new face-to-face delivery service from January 2027, including:

• Doctors
• Clinical reviewers
• Clinical technicians

👉Interested in staying updated?
Prior to commencing any formal recruitment process, we are keen to engage with interested clinicians who would like us to keep them updated on progress as we build and fit out our clinics and, of course, provide further details and timelines in respect of the recruitment process.

If you would like to keep updated on the development of the programme and the formal recruitment process, please email us at [email protected]
