📣 Considering a career in occupational health? Or simply interested in learning more about the profession?

Join us for “Introduction to Occupational Health”, a free online event hosted by Society of Occupational Medicine, on 1 July from 2:00–4:30pm.

Designed for anyone wanting to learn more about occupational health and the different specialisms involved, this event is a great opportunity to hear directly from experienced professionals working in the field.

Our very own Karen Phillpotts (OT & Head of Clinical standards for MSK & MH) and Simon Ahmed (Physiotherapist & Head of MSK) will be exploring:
• The role of occupational therapy in occupational health
• Physiotherapy in occupational health
• How to get into the profession
• Where to find further information and support

Our PAM colleague, Janet O'Neill (Head of PAM Academy, Deputy Head of the National School of Occupational Health), will also share insights on:
• How to relate your previous experience to the role of occupational health
• What is required to upskill for your role and how to ensure the role is right for you
• What types of roles to look for – as there isn’t one specific entry point
• The benefits of mentoring and how the mentor scheme can support

💬 There will also be an opportunity to ask questions to the experts.

🍎 Ahead of World Wellbeing Week (24–30 June), we're exploring the role employers can play in supporting healthier eating habits at work.

While food choices are often seen as a personal responsibility, the working environment can have a significant influence on daily habits. Busy schedules, limited break times and easy access to convenience foods can all shape the choices people make throughout the day.

In our latest blog, we explore:

• Why workplace nutrition matters for employee wellbeing
• Five practical ways employers can support healthy eating at work
• How to create a workplace culture that makes healthier choices more accessible

💡 By combining education with environmental support, organisations can take meaningful steps towards supporting healthier habits and improving employee wellbeing.

💻A fully digital flu process is now one of the most effective ways to protect your workforce and reduce business disruption.

With seasonal flu costing UK employers an estimated £1.6 billion each year - and employees typically off work for 4–7 days - making vaccination fast and accessible has never mattered more.

Our Digital Flu Portal removes the barriers that traditionally limit uptake:
✔ No paperwork
✔ No manual admin
✔ No chasing employees
✔ Instant voucher delivery
✔ Nationwide access to thousands of pharmacies

Employees can request their voucher, find a participating pharmacy and book their appointment in just a few clicks - all designed for today’s hybrid workforce.

🎥 Watch our short video to see how the Digital Flu Portal makes rolling out your flu programme simple, fast and fully digital: https://www.optimahealth.co.uk/protect-your-workforce-this-flu-season/

Flu season doesn’t wait for your organisation’s busiest periods - and last year proved it. Many businesses that didn’t plan early found their teams unable to access NHS vaccinations due to tighter eligibility and limited supply.

With similar pressures expected again this year, early planning isn’t just sensible. It’s essential.

The impact speaks for itself:
💷 £1.6 billion - The annual cost of flu‑related absences to UK businesses
⏱️ 4-7 days - The typical time an employee is off work with flu
🏥100,000+ - Hospitalisations prevented each year by flu vaccination, easing NHS pressure

With NHS eligibility more limited again this year, fewer employees will qualify for free flu jabs, leaving businesses to fill the gap.

Protect your team. Minimise disruption. Prioritise wellbeing.

💬 This month, we're supporting Loneliness Awareness Week by sharing practical ways organisations can help to create more connected workplaces.

Loneliness at work can affect anyone, whether they're working on-site, remotely or in a hybrid role. And it can happen for many reasons, such as being new to a team, navigating organisational change, or simply finding it difficult to connect with those around you.

The good news is that creating a more connected workplace is something both employees and managers can help shape.

In our latest blog, we explore practical ways to reduce loneliness at work, including:

• The role both employees and managers can play
• Simple ways to build a stronger sense of belonging
• Where to find additional support and resources

With this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme focused on “taking action”, we’re sharing practical ways to support meaningful conversations at work - helping to reduce stigma and ensure people can access the right support when they need it.

Starting a conversation about mental health can feel daunting, but with the right guidance, line managers can approach these discussions with confidence, empathy, and understanding.

In this month’s blog we explore:

• The importance of encouraging open conversations
• How line managers can approach mental health discussions
• How occupational health services can provide support

With research showing that up to half of employees don’t feel supported to discuss their mental health at work, it’s essential that line managers feel equipped to have these conversations early and effectively.
