🧊 WHY COLD WATER? IT’S MORE THAN JUST RECOVERY. 🧊
We all know an ice bath is cold… but what’s actually happening inside your body when you take the plunge?
🥶 DOPAMINE — YOUR “FEEL GOOD” CHEMICAL
Cold water exposure creates a strong physiological response in the body. Research has found that cold-water immersion can increase circulating dopamine, with one study finding dopamine levels rose to around 250% of baseline following immersion in 14°C water.
Dopamine is involved in motivation, reward, attention and alertness — which may help explain why people often report feeling more switched on and energised after cold exposure.
⚡ NORADRENALINE — THE ALERTNESS RESPONSE
The same study found an even larger increase in noradrenaline — around 530% of baseline. Noradrenaline plays an important role in the body’s stress response and is involved in alertness, attention and regulating the cardiovascular system.
So that feeling of being wide awake, focused and ready to go after an ice bath isn’t necessarily just in your head.
💪 AND THEN THERE’S RECOVERY
Cold-water immersion is also widely used following exercise because cold exposure can influence blood flow, inflammation and the body’s perception of muscle soreness.
🧠 BUT THERE’S ANOTHER SIDE TO IT…
Getting into cold water is uncomfortable. You have to control your breathing, stay calm and deliberately put yourself somewhere your body doesn’t naturally want to be.
That makes it a challenge for your mind as well as your body.
You don’t need to love the cold.
You just need to take that first step. 🧊
