We’re trialling a new scheme to prevent medical equipment getting thrown away.

NHS and council-issued items like crutches, wheelchairs and frames should be returned when no longer needed, but too often they’re being thrown away at recycling centres.

Dedicated containers are available at Falmouth, Truro, Newquay and Launceston HWRCs. Items will be collected by Medequip, then checked, cleaned and reused whenever possible.

If you no longer need equipment, please contact your provider to arrange collection or drop it off at one of the four trial sites.

🚽 A Simple Routine Can Preserve Dignity

One of the most overlooked challenges in dementia is recognizing the need to use the bathroom. As the brain changes, the ability to interpret body signals, remember where the bathroom is, or communicate the need may also change. Waiting until your loved one asks for help can sometimes be too late.

Creating a predictable toileting routine can reduce accidents, anxiety, skin breakdown, urinary tract infections, and caregiver stress. Consider offering gentle bathroom visits first thing in the morning, after meals, every 2–3 hours during the day, before leaving the house, and before bedtime. Present it as part of the daily routine rather than asking, “Do you need to go?” Many people living with dementia will answer “no,” even when they do need the bathroom.

Most importantly, approach these moments with patience, kindness, and respect. Preserving dignity is just as important as preventing accidents. A calm voice, familiar routine, and reassuring presence can help your loved one feel safe and successful.

Small routines often make the biggest difference in dementia care.

❤️ Compassion in routine. Dignity in every step.
