It has been such a privilege to hold space for clients’ emotional shifts lately.

In recent weeks, a number of clients have found themselves unexpectedly overcome by feelings of grief, release and surrender.

During massages, facials and Zone Technique sessions.

Feelings. Sensations. Tears.

Often sparked by physical and energetic connection.

Often mid treatment. Sometimes during a consultation. But always welcome.

Always safe to express.
Always honoured and respected.
Always allowed to flow.

I don’t interfere. I don’t overreact. I don’t rush to the rescue.

I simply check in to make sure my client feels safe to sit with the experience. Then I pass the tissues, hold a calm and supportive space, and pause.

Until the emotion has moved through the body.
Until the tears soften and subside.
Until the moment feels right to continue the treatment and support the integration of the energetic shift that has taken place.

Our bodies often hold experiences, emotions, and stories that haven’t yet been fully processed.

When they begin to surface, it can be a powerful part of the healing journey.

So when the tears come, let them come.

When it comes to healing, there’s a relevant concept in psychology called ‘secondary gain’ or ‘secondary benefit.’

It doesn’t mean anyone is imagining their illness. And it doesn’t mean that symptoms aren’t real.

It means that sometimes illness, stress or chronic symptoms can UNCONSCIOUSLY serve a purpose.

For some people, being unwell may create -

Permission to rest
Receiving care, love and attention
Relief from pressure or responsibility
A sense of identity
Protection from overwhelm
Connection to someone or something from the past
Familiarity and safety for a nervous system that has spent years in survival mode

The mind and body are deeply connected, and healing is not always as simple as CONSCIOUSLY wanting to get better. No matter how disruptive symptoms are.

Because sometimes getting better means -

Changing relationships or relationship dynamics.
Setting boundaries.
Leaving survival mode.
Becoming visible again.
Learning how to exist without struggle.

And for many people, that can feel uncomfortable, unfamiliar or even unsafe to the nervous system.

Healing is physical.
But it is also emotional, behavioural and psychological.

So, if you’re struggling with a chronic condition, if you’re considering ways to heal, or if you’re finding that despite trying different solutions, you aren’t quite getting the relief you had anticipated… it may help to sit with the question of ‘how might this situation be serving me?’

No judgement.
No blame.
No shame.
Just openness and curiosity.

Your body CAN shift out of survival mode when given the right support.

Interventions like sports massage, physio appointments and ice baths absolutely have their place — and can be incredibly effective for recovery and performance.

But for some people, especially those already running on stress hormones and nervous system overload, more intense “push through” approaches can sometimes add to the body’s stress load rather than fully resolving the root issue.

That’s why relief can feel temporary.

The symptoms settle for a while… then return again.
