A new MenB (meningococcal) Vaccine programme will be introduced this summer to help protect young people as they move into further education and university life.

The programme will offer the MenB vaccine to all Year 13 students (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008) and to those under 25 starting university or residential further education for the first time this autumn. Eligible individuals will receive two doses for effective protection.

From mid-July, those eligible will be contacted directly via the NHS App, text, email or letter, with appointments available from the end of July.

Although MenB disease is rare, it can be very serious and can lead to life-changing complications. Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk, particularly as young people enter new environments where close contact can increase exposure.

Eligible young people are strongly encouraged to take up the offer when invited and to ensure they complete both doses. It is also important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia and to seek urgent medical advice if concerned.

๐ŸŽฌ Last week our Cornwall and Devon School Age Immunisations team visited Tor Bridge High in Plymouth to shoot two informational videos about the HPV vaccination.

The videos will help explain what to expect during the vaccination process, why the HPV vaccine is so important, and why receiving it in a school setting is often the best option for young people.

We're producing two versions: one for parents and carers, which will be shared alongside school vaccine invitation letters, and another aimed at students, to be shown during classroom sessions and school assemblies.

Weโ€™re looking forward to sharing the finished videos soon. A huge thank you to Tor Bridge High for welcoming us into their school and supporting us in creating these valuable resources.

Menโ€™s Health Week: Know what NHS screening is available to you.

The NHS offers a range of screening programmes to help detect health problems early โ€“ often before symptoms appear.

โœ”๏ธ HPV vaccination for boys from Year 8, with catch-up available if missed at school. It helps protect against several HPV-related cancers.

โœ”๏ธ Diabetic eye screening for everyone aged 12 and over with diabetes to help prevent sight loss caused by diabetic retinopathy.

โœ”๏ธ Bowel cancer screening for adults aged 50 to 74. A simple home testing kit is sent every two years to help detect bowel cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

โœ”๏ธ Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening for men in England during the year they turn 65. This quick scan can identify a potentially life-threatening condition before symptoms develop.

โœ”๏ธ Vaccinations for older adults, including flu, shingles, pneumococcal, RSV and COVID-19 vaccines, depending on your age and eligibility.

Screening is for people who feel well โ€“ it can help spot problems early and save lives. When you're invited, don't ignore it. Take up the offer and encourage the men in your life to do the same.
