New figures show that flu vaccination uptake among school-aged children across Cornwall and Devon could be higher, particularly among older children.

Flu can be a serious illness for children, and teenagers can still become seriously unwell and pass flu on to others. The flu vaccine helps protect children and reduces their risk of serious complications.

This autumn, our school immunisation teams will once again be visiting schools across Cornwall and Devon.

With consent, most children from Reception to Year 11 can get their free, quick and simple nasal flu vaccine at school.

📅 Our nurses will be visiting schools across Cornwall and Devon from September to November.

📩 Keep an eye out for your child’s consent email from their school and make sure you complete it when it arrives.

Catch-up clinics are available for children who are:
• Absent from school
• Unwell on the day
• Home educated
• Looking for an alternative vaccination option

🥚 Nearly 500 people have become ill with salmonella. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating, with cases linked to imported eggs.

To reduce your risk:
• Look for eggs with the British Lion mark or those produced under the Laid in Britain egg assurance scheme
• Avoid raw or undercooked eggs, particularly when eating out if you’re unsure where the eggs are from

For most fit and healthy people, salmonella infection will get better on its own within a few days. However, it can cause more serious illness in vulnerable people.

Symptoms usually develop 12–72 hours after infection and can include:
🤢 Diarrhoea
🤕 Stomach cramps
🤮 Vomiting
🌡️ Fever

If you develop symptoms, drink plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration. It is better to avoid anti-diarrhoeal medicines if you can.
