Working together to help shape safer Scouting ☀️

Sun and heat are part of outdoor Scouting - but protection needs to work in practice.

Through Sunguarding®, the Melanoma Fund is working with The Scouts to understand what works, what gets in the way and what could be done better

At Gilwell Reunion, volunteers will be sharing their experiences through our Sun Safety Review, helping shape practical support for better sun and heat protection across Scouting.

This weekend, I’ll be at Gilwell Reunion, working with The Scouts to answer an important question: How are sun and heat really managed across Scouting – and what gets in the way of doing it better?

Our Sun Safety Review will explore the behaviours and barriers behind protection, helping us develop practical ways to better support young people and volunteers outdoors.

Melanoma Fund Trustee Dr Hugo De La Peña, MD, PHD, FRCP. joined the BBC this week to discuss encouraging Phase III results from a personalised mRNA-based treatment for people with high-risk melanoma.

Used alongside immunotherapy following surgery, the treatment could help reduce the risk of melanoma returning or spreading.

It’s an exciting development in personalised cancer treatment, while reinforcing an important distinction: this is a treatment for melanoma, not a vaccine to prevent it.

Another important step forward for protecting children outdoors.

We're delighted that the Department for Education's HAF Weekly Newsletter has again highlighted our Sunguarding® resources to help providers manage UV risk during summer holiday activities.

Thousands of children spend long hours outdoors during the school holidays, yet UV remains one of the few environmental risks that is invisible and often overlooked.

It's encouraging to see practical prevention becoming part of the conversation.

UV is a workplace hazard. It's time we treated it like one.

“Health and safety has gone mad.” We hear that phrase all the time.

Yet one of the biggest occupational cancer risks facing construction workers is still largely overlooked.

It was a pleasure to contribute to this Construction News feature highlighting why UV exposure deserves to be recognised as a genuine workplace hazard.

We don’t make hard hats or safety boots optional, so why do we still treat protection from UV exposure differently?

Perhaps health and safety hasn’t gone mad after all.

Perhaps we’ve simply forgotten that skin is PPE too.

Sun protection is broken in the UK.

Despite decades of public health messaging, skin cancer rates continue to rise. Awareness alone isn't changing behaviour.

That's why ITV News Meridian visited Perrins School in Hertfordshire to see our Trustee, Dr Hugo De La Peña and our CEO Michelle Baker present Sunguarding® Schools.

A key part of the programme is our Sunguard UV-reactive wristbands. As soon as UV levels become significant, the bands change colour, giving children an immediate visual reminder that it's time to think about sun protection. They make the invisible visible and help turn knowledge into action.

Combined with our PSHE Association Quality Marked lesson, assemblies and practical resources, Sunguarding® Schools is helping children build lifelong sun-safe habits.

If we're serious about reducing melanoma and other skin cancers, we need to move beyond awareness and start embedding behaviour change where it matters most: in schools.
