Severn & Prince of Wales Bridges advance notice of roadworks
🚧 SEVERN CROSSINGS: ROADWORKS AND OVERNIGHT CLOSURES, 16–23 OCTOBER 🚧
If you use the M48 Severn Bridge or M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, please check these dates and allow extra time for your journey.
National Highways says it has adjusted working hours following feedback, to reduce disruption during the busiest morning eastbound and evening westbound periods.
🟠Friday 16–Thursday 22 October
• M48 Severn Bridge: hard shoulders closed in both directions, around the clock.
🟠Monday 19–Friday 23 October
M48 Severn Bridge daytime closures of lane 1:
• Towards Wales: 5am–3pm.
• Towards England: 9.30am–6pm.
There will also be restrictions around M48 junction 1 at Aust, including:
• The westbound entry slip road reduced to one lane.
• Closure of the outer ring of the A403/M48 roundabout.
• Closure of lane 1 on the northbound A403 approach.
🔴 Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 October — overnight
• M48 towards England closed, 9pm–6am, between M4 junction 23 at Magor and M48 junction 1. The stated diversion is via M5 junction 16.
• M48 junction 1 entry and exit slip roads towards Wales closed, 9pm–6am.
• M4 Prince of Wales Bridge towards Wales closed, 10pm–6am, between junctions 21 and 23. Traffic will be diverted via the M48 Severn Bridge, including HGVs.
🔴 Thursday 22 and Friday 23 October — overnight
• M48 Severn Bridge towards Wales closed, 9pm–6am, between junctions 1 and 2.
• Diversion via the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge.
Each overnight closure finishes the following morning.
National Highways has apologised for delays in sharing this week’s information. It also explains that the recent resurfacing trial was separate from the work to return lorries over 7.5 tonnes to the M48. Some preparation was completed during that trial, but the remaining work needs different lane and road closures.
Please check National Highways’ website before travelling for the latest information, and share this with anyone who regularly uses the bridges.
