This is where I’m at my happiest 🐝💛 I absolutely love sharing my knowledge and love of honeybees with others, and showing people just how fascinating they are and the important role they play.

I’ve loved welcoming people to the apiary whenever I’ve been able to throughout the summer — and, of course, whenever the Cornish weather has played along! ☀️🌧️

There’s just something really special about opening up a hive and sharing a little bit of the wonderful world of honeybees with someone else. 🐝

🐝💛 A little moment on my bee suit…

Sometimes the smallest moments are the most fascinating.

Two honeybees, face to face, sharing food and communicating through trophallaxis — or, to us, looking rather like a little bee kiss. 🤭🐝💋

There’s always something new to notice when you spend time with bees. 🍯🌿

Bees: “You forgot something… we fixed it!” 🐝😂

I forgot to go back and fill the gap in this super with a couple of empty frames of foundation… but the bees certainly didn’t waste the space! 🐝🍯

It just goes to show how amazing honeybees are. Given an empty space, they simply got to work and built their own beautiful comb — their very own version of the missing frames!

And the result? The most gorgeous natural cut comb honey. 💛🍯 There’s something extra special (and delicious!) about eating honey exactly as the bees made it.

I appreciate this might not be everyone’s idea of heaven… 😂🐝

But the late afternoon sun, the smell of honey and thousands of bees buzzing around me… absolute bliss. 🍯🌿💛

Sometimes you just have to stop and take it all in. ✨

What are you doing, Cornwall Council? 😔

At the beginning of this month you shared that you’re encouraging wildflowers, reducing mowing, and creating better habitats for bees, butterflies and other wildlife.

Yet this video appears to show flowering ragwort being removed from a town pavement, well away from grazing livestock.

I appreciate there are situations where ragwort needs to be managed where there is a genuine risk to horses or livestock. However, seeing it removed in an urban location like this seems difficult to reconcile with the Council's commitment to supporting biodiversity and pollinators.

I know this might not reach the Council directly, but I’d really welcome some clarity on this, as it feels at odds with the message shared with the people of Cornwall earlier this month on your page 😠

Amongst all the hive inspections and beekeeping jobs lately, this was the highlight of my week. 🐝❤️

I've been incredibly busy with the bees lately, so it was really nice to take some time out to share the fascinating world of honeybees with these two budding beekeepers. 🐝💛

They were absolutely eager to learn more about bees, and their enthusiasm, curiosity and interest were wonderful to see. We spent time looking through the hive, talking about the important role bees play in our environment, and exploring the intricate world that exists inside a colony.

I genuinely believe that educating and inspiring children about bees and nature is so important. The future of our pollinators depends on the children we inspire today. They are the future custodians of our wildlife and countryside, and I hope to do much more of this in the future.

Who knows? Perhaps I've met a couple of future beekeepers. 🐝🌱❤️

Wonderful to see Cornwall Council celebrating wildflowers and the benefits they bring to bees, butterflies and other wildlife. 🌼🐝🦋

It does make me wonder though: if these habitats are so important, why has the proposed reintroduction of glyphosate only been paused and not scrapped altogether?

I'll be following the next steps with interest. Watch this space...

The Swarm Was In...But Where Was The Queen? 😳

This swarm looked like the perfect catch. It was in an ideal position - not too high, easy to reach, and on a nice accessible branch.

The bees were soon in the box, they were fanning at the entrance, and everything seemed to be going exactly to plan.

Then I spotted the queen... on the outside of the box!

She was particularly flighty, taking off and returning several times while the workers continued fanning. Not wanting to risk losing her altogether, I gently caught her in a queen clip and placed her safely inside.

So, although it looked like the perfect swarm, it turns out the queen had other ideas! 🐝😂
