Melasma on deeper skin tones has always been the treatment many practitioners have been too scared to treat. Here’s why RF microneedling is changing that.

As an Independent Nurse Prescriber led clinic we get asked almost daily: “will this make my pigmentation worse?” Valid fear because energy-based devices have a real history of triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in melanin-rich skin when used by the wrong hands.

“Will laser make my dark spots worse?” I get asked this every week, and it’s a fair question.

Older lasers weren’t built with melanin-rich skin in mind…too much heat, too much risk of rebound hyperpigmentation. PicoGenesis is different. She’d been avoiding shorts for years because of her knees. Not her face but her knees. Dark, textured, rough and dismissed every time she brought it up.
If you have deeper, melanin-rich skin you already know how stubborn this kind of pigmentation can be. Years of kneeling, dry skin, old scrapes that never fully faded — in deeper skin tones our melanocytes respond harder to that kind of friction, so the pigment builds up and stays longer.

What actually shifts it: glycolic, citric and lactic acid to lift away the built-up dead skin, salicylic acid to work into the texture, tranexamic acid and hexylresorcinol to calm the pigment underneath and vitamin C to brighten it through.
