Around six million people in the UK have diabetes — and a GP says many don't realise how unwell they are, because the early signs are so easy to explain away.
Dr Saira Bano says people often picture the classic symptoms: constant thirst, always needing the loo. But she's flagged five subtler ones, including:
• Thrush that keeps coming back even after treatment
• Blurred vision that comes and goes, so you assume you need new glasses
• Cuts and grazes that linger for weeks
• Tingling, burning or numbness in the feet
• Dark, velvety patches of skin on the neck, armpits or groin
Her warning: people live with these for months or years, putting them down to stress, screens or getting older.
