“You’ve changed”… Good, that’s the idea!
Have you ever been subject to comments like this before when you’ve been working towards your goals?
Y’know, that pushback from friends, family or even your colleagues at work?
“You’ve changed”
“You used to be so much fun”
“You don’t need to lose weight”
“Go on, another won’t hurt”
“You’re looking a bit too skinny”
“Live a little”
Sound familiar?
Comments like these don’t half leave you feeling deflated, don’t they?
You’ve been working so hard, only to feel like that support / encouragement isn’t there from those who you expected it from the most
Now, if these opinions become all too consuming, you run a massive risk of starting to align your decisions with theirs, to what they think you ‘should’ be doing instead
So in order to make sure these negative comments don’t hold you back, because let’s face it, that’s all they are, here’s what I’d advise you do…
1️⃣ It’s your responsibility to help them understand what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. And not forgetting how it can benefit them in the process too because they are going to be having you back at your best. A lot of the time people just don’t get it yet their lack of awareness of what you’re doing can come across as putting resistance up against it so it’s on you to get them on board.
2️⃣ Get really clear on what your goals truly are and what they mean to you when you achieve them because a lot of the time, you become distracted because there isn’t any clarity with where you’re heading which allows other people to influence your next move.
3️⃣ Finally, it says more about them and their insecurities as all your positive actions are doing is holding a mirror up to what they are avoiding doing themselves. Whilst prioritising our health should be something that we all should be doing more, to some people, it’s not at the top of their agenda and that’s fine, but the fact that it is for you leaves them feeling challenged and this is when the comments come hurtling your way.
So the next time you receive comments like these, because you inevitably will, remember to stay in your own lane and just let your results do the talking
