Listening to What We Need 🤍
This weekend, I found myself needing exactly that.
After a slightly more demanding week than usual, I recognised a need to pause. Sometimes the hardest thing isn't knowing what to do, but simply noticing what we need before we become quietly overwhelmed by it.
I had my heart set on a dip in the sea, but the tide unfortunately had other ideas. So my partner suggested a lake dip instead, and it turned out to be just what I needed.
Getting into cold water is never particularly comfortable, but something shifts when you settle into it. The breath becomes steadier, your attention narrows to the present moment, and your nervous system seems to find its way back to balance.
I have to say, the person who stepped into the water wasn't quite the same person who came out🤩
The shift felt almost instant, leaving me feeling lighter, calmer and much more like myself again.
Nature has a brilliant way of bringing us back to ourselves.
Cold water isn't for everyone, and it should always be approached carefully and safely, but it reminded me just how quickly we can support our nervous system when we step outside, connect with nature and give ourselves permission to simply be.
❄️ A few fascinating cold-water facts:
• It can help regulate the nervous system and improve resilience to stress
• It encourages slower, deeper breathing.
• It may boost mood through the release of dopamine and endorphins.
• It can help us reconnect with the present moment.
• You don't need to stay in long to experience the benefits. • Nature amplifies the effect – the water is only part of the experience.
We spend so much of life trying to avoid discomfort. Yet sometimes stepping towards it reminds us just how resilient we really are.
