Self Management UK

Self Management UK We believe everyone living with long-term conditions should have access to self-management support, e Self-management and self-care are crucial skills.

On average, people living with a health condition spend just 4 hours per year with their health care team; the rest of the time they are managing day-to-day life with that condition on their own – or self-managing. Self Management UK educates people on the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to improve somebody's wellbeing and health. Self-management does not mean doing it alone. We help peop

le make informed choices about what services and support they want and need and how to work in partnership with healthcare teams. Self Management UK is a charity providing support and education to those with long-term health conditions, poor mental health and their carers. Our education courses are designed to give practical guidance on how participants can live better and healthier lives and are delivered by highly trained Tutors. We believe people with long-term conditions and their carers should feel understood, empowered, and supported. We put the people at the focus of everything we do. "Self Management UK is... the only credible provider: A former NHS and now not-for-profit organisation; Strongly endorsed by the NHS; A strong track record of successful delivery of generic long-term condition patient education programmes." - A London CCG Commissioner.

We held our first face to face reunion for previous course participants in London last week. It was great to see some old faces and catch up to see how everybody has been utilising their self-management skills to manage their conditions.

Some of our ex-course participants said at the reunion -

“I have to tell you how much these courses have helped me. This course has been very important for me. After my stroke Angie and other tutors helped me to read and write again. Self Management changed my life. I’m so grateful to everybody that’s helped me. I now go to other groups. I now do art singing and dancing. When I met you I could hardly move. I’ve been doing a lot of drawing and painting too.”

“Going on the course encouraged me to be far more vocal and assertive in dealing with my healthcare. I’ve been pushing more to get things done, like the tests that I needed for example.”

It’s incredible to continue to see positive health outcomes for our ex-course participants, and see how they continue to utilise the skills we’ve taught to fulfil a healthier & happier life.

Brain fog can look like losing your train of thought mid-sentence, finding it difficult to take in new information, feeling fatigued and exhausted, or being unable to make a decision or commitment.

Brain fog can be caused by things such as a lack of sleep, or stress - but we know brain fog for those with long COVID is a growing concern and we’re working hard to develop ways to support those living with long COVID symptoms.

If you’ve experienced brain fog, or similar long COVID symptoms, the first and most important thing to do is speak to your GP and share with them all the lingering symptoms you’re experiencing.

We’d also like to hear from those experiencing or have lived experience of long COVID. You can get in touch by sending us an email to [email protected] or direct-message.

Eating disorders affect 1 in 50 people in the UK. As a charity, we support people with a variety of conditions including eating disorders – educating them on the tools to manage their condition on behalf of the NHS. We recognise how tough it is to recover from an eating disorder or begin to manage the disorder.

This year, we want to debunk some of the myths about eating disorders -

Myth: Eating disorders are a choice.
Fact: Eating disorders are complex illnesses – there is no single cause. Instead, they are thought to be caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Eating disorders are mental health disorders and are never a personal choice.

Myth: Someone must be underweight to have an eating disorder.
Fact: Often when people think of someone with an eating disorder, they think of someone who is significantly underweight. However, although weight loss is typical in anorexia nervosa, most people with an eating disorder stay at an apparently “healthy” weight or are “overweight”.

Myth: People can't recover from the illness - it's in their genes.
Fact: Although there is evidence that someone’s genes contribute to the risk of developing an eating disorder, this does not mean that they cannot recover. Genes are only one part of a complex mix of risk factors. Full recovery from an eating disorder is possible with the right help and support.

For more information and support on eating disorders, you can speak to your GP - or visit: https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/behaviours/eating-disorders/overview/

Yesterday marked , a marked year every year by Rethink Mental Illness, MIND and Co-op to highlight the importance of talking about mental health, and the life-changing impact even a small conversation can have.

Talking about mental health doesn’t have to be awkward. It could be a sticky note on someone’s desk, an evening video call, or side-by-side over a sandwich.

Everybody has mental health, and there’s no right or wrong way to talk about it. But you may find it helpful to ask open ended questions and find somewhere comfortable. It’s also important to remember that if somebody doesn’t feel able to talk, or you don’t feel able to talk either – that’s okay too. Be patient.

Have you heard of peer-to-peer support; how does it differ from any other kind of support?

At Self Management UK we’ve placed the concept of peer-to-peer support as one of our key values. We firmly believe that for those living with long-term conditions, or dealing with illness, that peer-led support can have outstanding outcomes of improvement and our track-record of achievements proves this.

Lots of our Staff and Volunteers have their own conditions too, so for those joining a course with us, it’s likely that you’ll be speaking to somebody that has had similar experiences.

Although it’s important to remember that everybody’s experiences and circumstances are different, peer-led support can help us empathise with the person we’re talking to – and come from a place of understanding and lived experience.

Peer-to-peer support isn’t for everybody. But if you want to try, there’s a number of options available. Such as:

Our free Mental Fight Club project giving people across the UK an opportunity to connect virtually on ZOOM to build their emotional resilience with classes taught by our highly trained Tutors. You can find out more by sending us a direct-message or email to [email protected]

Or websites such as MINDS Side By Side online community. You can view more here: www.mind.org.uk/information-support/side-by-side-our-online-community/

You may also decide to speak with your GP about peer-led support in your area.

Practicing gratitude can help to promote optimism and helps us to develop a more positive outlook. It lets us pause for a moment to reflect on something we have in our life right now instead of always striving for more.

You can start practicing gratitude today by simply writing down something that you’re grateful for and taking a moment to reflect on it 💚

Some of us might be looking at spending away from family or alone this year, especially those shielding from COVID-19 with health conditions. But whether it’s due to COVID-19 or other reasons, remember that we can still make sure we enjoy the day and still have chance to connect with family and others.

Most of our staff will be away over the Christmas break from Monday 20th December, until Tuesday 4th January, but if you have a course between these dates – don’t worry, we’ll be there, and we can’t wait to see you 💚

We’re wishing you a very healthy, happy and safe Christmas.
