Men over 50: Should you get a PSA test for prostate cancer?

It might seem like an obvious “yes”… but the reality is more complex.

- PSA tests can detect prostate cancer early, often before symptoms appear
- But the test isn’t perfect and can be raised for non-cancer reasons
- Some prostate cancers are slow-growing and may never cause harm
- Survival rates for early-stage cases are very similar whether you choose immediate treatment or active surveillance
- Treatment decisions can come with important trade-offs, including potential side effects

The most important thing? It’s a personal decision, and understanding the facts helps you make the right choice for you.

As a GP, one of the most common questions I hear from men over 50 is, “Should I have a PSA test to check for prostate cancer?” It sounds like it should be a simple “yes.” Af…

Many people assume that if they feel well, their heart health must be fine, but cardiovascular risk can build silently over time.

Tools like QRISK3 help assess your short-term risk, but they don’t always tell the full story. Factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking history and family history can all increase your long-term risk.

At Kleyn Healthcare, we offer personalised cardiovascular assessments, cholesterol reviews, blood testing and prevention plans tailored to you.

Whether that includes lifestyle support, monitoring or discussing treatments such as statins, our clinicians are here to help you make informed decisions.

Bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK, yet early detection can make a huge difference.

Symptoms to watch for include:
- Blood in your poo or bleeding from your bottom
- Changes in bowel habits (diarrhoea, constipation, going more/less often)
- Unexplained weight loss
- Abdominal pain or swelling
- Ongoing tiredness

Screening matters:
- The FIT test can detect hidden blood in stool samples
- It’s used by the NHS and available privately at Kleyn Healthcare
- Even if symptoms seem minor (like piles), it’s important to get checked

Early action = better outcomes. Don’t ignore the signs.
