lly, we provide a collection service for Human donor milk from mothers within the community which is treated and stored at the Human Milk Bank in Southampton. We then respond to the needs of the regions Neo Natal Units, transporting and distributing the donated milk for the care of premature babies. We resupply the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (currently based at Thruxton) with blood for use by the helicopter and rapid response vehicles. This is done every 24 hours, and more often when supplies are depleted. We operate 365 days per year, between 19:00 and 07:00 weekday evenings and 24hrs a day at weekends and on public holidays. We also provide a booked daytime service during the week. The services provided by SERV Wessex allows hospitals and critical care units to divert financial and staff resources elsewhere. Our team of volunteers comprise; riders, drivers, dispatchers and supporters. Our riders and drivers all hold advanced riding/driving qualifications. All volunteers give up their own time to cover the shifts, in all weathers, throughout the year. We have a fleet of 3 motorcycles and 2 cars, although many volunteers use their own vehicles and donate the use of their own fuel.

Today the volunteers of SERV Wessex - The Blood Runners were raising funds at Tesco Amesbury. The generosity of the public was amazing and the funds raised play a crucial part in keeping our services to the NHS going - thank you Amesbury. Special mention to our host Laura Allies who is the community champion for Tesco at Amesbury, but she also does so much more for the community - thank you 🙏

Yes folks it's an AI image!
Serv Wessex is just one of around 34 blood bike charities that deliver the essential and urgent services to the NHS and air ambulances around the country. Of course, most people associate the service with the motorcycle riders who have the honour of being called upon on shift to saddle up. However, this post is not about them. Serv Wessex also have a number of volunteers who drive on four wheels and play a key part in our service delivery. However, this post is not about them either!

Front and centre, playing a key role are our amazing dispatchers/controllers. Without them, none of our essential services are possible. These unseen heroes are the ones that take the calls from the NHS establishments and air ambulance charities and task our riders and drivers throughout the shift. They work seamlessly, putting the logistical plans together, prioritise consignments, keep our 'customers' informed and monitor our riders and drivers, keeping them safe.

Serv Wessex needs more volunteers to fill this role and keep our service going. If you could commit to around 3 shifts per month (which can be a combination of weekend day shifts and weekday night shifts); have good attention to detail to log calls, consignment information, distance and timings information; attend a half day training session, then this could be the role for you.

We have an opportunity coming up to join our admin team as our secretary. Your role will be predominantly administrative, taking minutes of our committee meetings, ordering ID badges, carrying out DBS checks etc. If you would like more details or wish to be considered please email [email protected]
We are also looking to recruit more Dispatchers, these people take the calls from our hospitals and then coordinate our riders on the road. You don’t need to ride a bike for either of these roles.

Today saw our volunteers at the HMS Collingwood Open Day. Such an amazing event where the public are welcomed behind the gates of one of the Royal Navy's premier shore bases. Uniquely, all of our volunteers today are veterans of HM Armed Forces with representation from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.
The public were out in force with the weather gods being onside! Lots of interest in the services that SERV Wessex - The Blood Runners deliver across Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset.

The Wessex team had a warm and busy day yesterday supporting the Fareham 999 Day and engaging with the wonderful public. We had queues, often 6-10 deep to take their turn to sit on our marked bikes and mini-bikes. As ever, lots of the public shared their back stories. For those members of the public who hadn't heard about our work it gave lots of opportunities to explain what we do.

Its not always samples and blood we do. Donated human milk is also a big part of our work. Yesterday was an epic for us with 39lts being collected from the donor mum and delivered up to The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. I round trip of 220 miles.
Husband & wife team, Pip & John Varley a Dispatcher and rider, rose to this challenge collecting from Leila Parkes the donor mum.
Donated milk is hugely important for newborns whose own mums perhaps cannot give their own milk.
