📢 Office Volunteers Wanted

Do you have a little time to spare and an interest in supporting a local charity? Watford Mencap is looking for friendly and reliable office volunteers to join our team at our Community Hub on Langley Road.

This is a wonderful opportunity to use your experience and skills to make a real difference in your community while being part of a welcoming and supportive team.

What you could do:

• Help with general office administration

• Support with answering enquiries and reception tasks

• Assist with events, communications and community projects

• Help with basic website updates or digital tasks (if this interests you)

• Provide valuable behind-the-scenes support that helps our services run smoothly

What you’ll gain:

• A chance to meet new people and be part of a friendly team

• The opportunity to share your skills and experience

• Training, guidance and ongoing support

• The satisfaction of helping a local charity continue its important work supporting people with learning disabilities in our community

From welcoming visitors with a friendly smile to helping keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes, Ed is an important part of our team. His kindness, reliability and positive attitude make a real difference to staff, members and visitors every day.

Some of the clients who are supported by our Care and Support Agency swapped their usual Wednesday bowling session for a special day trip out, after voting for a visit to the zoo together.

The group regularly meet on Wednesdays to socialise, enjoy a game of bowling and spend time together, and over time they’ve formed some lovely friendships and a real bond with one another 💛

Everyone had a fantastic time exploring the zoo, seeing the animals and making more happy memories together.

🪂 Jason is taking fundraising to new heights for Watford Mencap! 💙

Skydiving has always been on Jason’s bucket list, and now he’s taking the leap to support a cause close to his heart. Inspired by his cousins Jake and Harry, and seeing first-hand the positive impact Watford Mencap has had on Jake’s life, Jason is raising money to help us continue supporting people with learning disabilities and their families across the community.

From children’s services and supported living to our Café in the Library and day opportunities, every donation helps us continue providing vital support to around 400 people each year.

Even better, Helping Herts will match the funds Jason raises, meaning every donation can make twice the impact! 🙌

A little bit of magic arrived at Day Opportunities! ⚡

Our clients had so much fun dressing up in amazing Harry Potter costumes kindly donated by Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden. The studio donated it's lost property to us recently, and within the items were plenty of robes, wands and more!

A huge thank you to the team at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden for such a thoughtful donation.

A little charity shop magic! ✨

“I bought this dress from the Watford Mencap Charity Shop half-price rail for just £10 before Christmas, not knowing when I’d ever get the chance to wear it.

A few weeks ago, I thought I was heading to a jazz club in London to celebrate my 50th birthday, but the ‘jazz club’ turned out to be my parents’ house, where they’d organised a surprise party instead!

My special crew all looked super flapper glam and Peaky Blinders sharp. Special shout-out to Bushey Mencap’s brilliant manager, Maddie, for finding flat caps and a Ralph Lauren waistcoat for my son.

A swell-egant time was had by all!” 🖤

We absolutely LOVE hearing stories like this. You never know what treasures you’ll find in our charity shop… and where they might take you!

A huge thank you to the amazing team from Lloyds Bank who came in to volunteer with us! 💙

The team got stuck into all sorts of jobs around Watford Mencap, from counting foreign currency donations, to moving logs, cleaning out the summer house, and even putting up a Migloo! 👏

Your hard work, teamwork and enthusiasm made such a difference, and we really appreciate you giving your time to support our services and spaces for the people we support. Thank you for spending the day with us!

Good advice for how to stay cool today. Keep well

☀️ Over the Bank Holiday, temperatures in Hertfordshire are expected to reach 32 degrees. Here are some simple steps to stay safe in hot weather:

✅ Avoid the sun between 11am–3pm
✅ Do physical activity in the cooler mornings or evenings
✅ Keep your home cool – close sun-facing curtains and windows
✅ If heading out: wear a hat, sunglasses, use sunscreen and seek shade
✅ Be mindful when sitting under trees as branches may drop suddenly in hot, dry conditions
✅ Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids
✅ Check on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours
✅ Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke – and know what to do
