Su***de awareness month.
Su***de awareness often focuses on encouraging the person in need to 'reach out' but what if someone did come to you for help?
Would you know what to do? Would you know what to say? Would you get flustered? Panic? Would you be afraid of saying the wrong thing? Would you have no clue how to respond if someone is in need and wants your help? If so, that's ok, you're not the only one.
Although often overlooked, su***de awareness is also about helping everyone to feel confident in knowing what to look out for, what to do, what to say, how to respond, how to help, where best to direct the person in need.
I've been on many su***de awareness training courses over the last 25years, some good, some bad. Some will say to look out for signs, but sometimes there are no signs. Some will say encourage the person suffering to reach out, talk to someone, but some people don't feel able to. After all, even in this day and age, there's still a lot of stigma out there.
There's no real 'one fits all' guide book. If there was, there wouldn't be an average of 20 lives per day lost to su***de in the UK.
So, what can you do?
What helps?
