Powerlifting as a sport has seen a massive uptick in participation in the last decade.

We are seeing some of the strongest men and women of all time in powerlifting and strongman currently walking the earth.

With increased participation comes increased injuries, but how safe is powerlifting?

The answer is…it’s pretty safe.

Incidence of injury ranges from 1-4.4 injuries per 1000 training hours = and injury that stops you from training every 6months to 2years.

Point prevalence was high at 70% meaning most reported injuries in the sport occurred during a lift. Mostly a competition lift.

Most injuries occurred in the lumbopelvic region which is why I am so interested in this areas as a low back pain specialist.

Better understanding of what gets injured and why is key.

Stay tuned for more in the why!

I had the pleasure of presenting as to a couple of weeks ago.

The talk was on what makes and breaks a . What injuries we can expect to see when we place the spine under axial compression and shear.

More importantly perhaps, we talked about what enables the spine to bare such enormous loads without breaking. What makes a superhuman.

Genetics, bone architecture, disc shape, muscle content, neural properties and much more.

Nick Birch then spoke extensively on bone health and particularly the advances in measuring bone health accurately.

I had a lot of fun prepping for this talk and will be doing more lectures like it in the future.

Uh oh!!!! Here we go.

Good luck to all my wonderful clients running the tomorrow.

In fact, good luck to everyone this marathon season. It’s such a wonderful event. I love the stories, the reasons people run, the journeys people are on at this time of year.

For some it’s a walk in the park, for some it’s a point to prove, for some it’s absolute hell.

Whatever the reason, good luck and enjoy the day. It’s events like this that make Britain Great, that make me proud to be from London.

Have a wonderful day all!!!

Recovery is not just for alcoholics.

Getting the most from your training is a fine art.

Imagine gleaning a percentage more from every training session by just taking care of yourself.

Sleep 💤

Eat like your life depends on it 🥩

Exercise to be hard to kill 💪

Once you get this right, you can focus on the cool stuff, compression, red light, massage guns, cryo, heat etc.

Recover as hard as you train.

Concussion - or what is now known as - Traumatic Brain Injury.

This was an emotional and eye opening evening at the Big Rugby Debate.

Long gone are the days where symptoms would be laughed off and ignored. The long term health implications are now clear.

kindly talked about their experiences as players.

I was proud to be attending with the top team and as they discussed the pro’s and cons of contact sport with Professor Damian Bailey.

The event was expertly hosted by author of Concussed - Sam Peters who triggered fascinating and thought provoking discussions amongst the panelist’s.

Thanks to all for such a phenomenal event. I hope to be part of the change where concussion is managed properly and safely from grass roots to the elite level.

Liking blood flow restriction at the moment. It’s one of those training modalities that gets forgotten. I use it sparingly, cycling it in if the body feels a bit beaten up.

The idea is to elicit muscular hypertrophy under lighter loads. It also has great application to keep tendons healthy and can be used in rehab for this purpose.

Enjoy that swoll feeling and stay healthy. Win Win!

Single leg RDL. Fantastic for glute medius and the lateral hip as a whole. Loading those muscles in a very functional pattern.

Staying braced through the trunk is imperative not just for spinal health but more for optimal mechanics and putting the most into the posterior chain.

Lock on the lats, use the abdominals to brace and provide a stable platform for the glute to work with.

Play around with variations and angles to hit your hip more. Load it bilateral, single arm, on your back, vest, goblet whatever. Go nuts.
