🤗 Urology Awareness Month at ICH Somerset 🤗

♥️ For many people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), understanding and communicating discomfort or changes in their bladder or urinary health can be difficult. That’s why at In Caring Hands (ICH) our carers’ awareness, patience and attentiveness matter so much.

🗓️ Urology conditions are incredibly common; in fact, one in two people will experience one in their lifetime, which is why Urology Awareness Month is so important and serves as a great reminder.

🏡 At ICH in Somerset, we provide care for people with PMLD in the local community.

💛 Our carers are trained to notice even small signs of a problem: changes in routine, discomfort, restlessness, or subtle shifts in behaviour. These observations help us protect the dignity, comfort and health of the people we care for.

🐾 National Dog Day at In Caring Hands Somerset 🐾

🏡 For many teenagers and young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), pets play an important role in their emotional world.

😺 Even though our carers don’t bring animals into visits, we understand how meaningful it is for a young person to stay connected to the pets they love at home.

🐶 A pet such as a dog can offer comfort, routine, sensory stimulation and emotional reassurance. The familiar sound of paws, the joy of a furry face greeting them in the morning, a wagging tail or the warmth of a loyal companion can help a young person feel secure, calm and understood.

💛 Pets can also support wellbeing in several meaningful ways. Reduced stress, improved mood, sensory engagement and gentle daily interaction all contribute to emotional regulation and a sense of stability, which can be especially important for young people with PMLD.

🧁 Baking fun at In Caring Hands Somerset 🧁

🥰 For young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), baking is a fully sensory experience.

🍰 The sweet aroma of vanilla, chocolate or caramel, the sight of colourful icing and sprinkles, the sound of stirring spoons, whisks and mixers and of course the excitement of tasting something delicious and sweet, all combine to create a wonderful experience.

🍪 Baking supports sensory stimulation, anticipation, communication and connection. It’s a chance to explore textures, enjoy companionship and be part of something fun and familiar and National Cupcake Day, on the 17th of August, is the perfect time to have fun in the kitchen!

🫶 Even when a young person can’t fully take part in all elements of the cake-making process, they can still enjoy the experience in their own meaningful way. A familiar scent, a bright colour or a shared smile during the activity can be just as engaging and comforting.

🫴 International Youth Day at ICH Somerset 🫴

🌍 The 12th of August each year celebrates International Youth Day, a day that recognises the hopes, strengths and aspirations of young people everywhere.

💛 For young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), these hopes, strengths, and aspirations often look different but remain just as real and just as valid. The desire to be included, understood, supported and valued is universal.

🙌 The theme for this year’s IYD is about young people sharing common aspirations across different contexts.

🤝 At In Caring Hands (ICH), our Somerset home‑visiting service supports young people with PMLD to experience dignity, connection and meaningful participation in daily life. This can be through sensory activities, companionship, inclusion or simply a shared smile or familiar voice.

🪴 For someone with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), friendship often looks different from the way most of us experience it.

🎼 A feeling of friendship can come from connection to a familiar voice, a favourite activity done together, or the comfort of being around people who understand their needs.

🌍 On the 30th of July, it’s the International Day of Friendship. A day that reminds us how important it is to feel connected, valued and included, no matter what friendship looks like for any of us.

🍦 World Ice Cream Day is on the 21st of July and is a lovely reminder that food isn’t just fuel, it’s also one of life’s greatest pleasures and can be deeply important to someone with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

🫴 At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Somerset, we support people with PMLD with our community care service.

🍧 For many of the people we support, taste is an important sensory experience, another way to explore the world and enjoy something meaningful.

🤗 An occasional cool, sweet treat on a warm July day can bring smiles, comfort and a moment of pure enjoyment. These small sensory moments often become the biggest highlights of the day.
