🌈 Celebrating Disability Pride Month with ICH in Somerset 🌈

πŸ“† Every July, Disability Pride Month brings disabled people and their communities together in solidarity. It's a time to recognise the creativity, resilience and achievements of disabled people, while also challenging the negative attitudes that still exist in society.

πŸ’ͺ For the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) that we support around Wells, this month is a reminder that they matter deeply. It’s also a chance for all of us at In Caring Hands (ICH) to start conversations, share stories and celebrate the diverse ways our young people communicate, connect and express themselves in their own homes and out in the local community.

πŸ€— Disability Pride Month has grown into a global celebration of disability rights, visibility and inclusion. Today it continues to highlight the barriers disabled people face and the importance of creating communities where everyone is valued and supported in order to thrive. With 3 out of 4 disabled people reporting negative attitudes, this month plays a vital role in changing the conversation and promoting pride, acceptance and equality.

🫡 We are currently recruiting!
Our Somerset PMLD in the Community team in Wells is looking for compassionate, reliable people, ideally with some care experience, who live in the local area and want to make a meaningful difference. If you show up with kindness, patience, warmth and curiosity, please πŸ‘‰ Learn more about us here: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/learning-disability-services/learning-disabilities-community-care/

🌱 National Growing for Wellbeing Week at ICH in Somerset 🌱

🌼 National Growing for Wellbeing Week is held in early June and highlights how gardening and growing food can boost wellbeing for people of all ages and abilities. Planting seeds, tending to plants and watching them grow helps to bring calm, purpose and enjoyment.

πŸ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Somerset, gardening is a lovely way for the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support to engage with the world around them. Whether it’s feeling soil between their fingers, watering plants, exploring textures or simply watching things grow, these moments offer rich sensory experiences.

🌿 Our community carers enjoy involving service users in gentle gardening activities at home. Watching vegetables develop can help build anticipation, connection and a sense of achievement.

πŸ“ And when something they’ve helped grow can be tasted and enjoyed, it brings an extra layer of excitement and pride.

πŸ“£ We are currently looking for new carers to join our Somerset PMLD in the Community team. This role is ideal for people who are compassionate, reliable and eager to make a meaningful difference.

πŸ›ž Accessibility Awareness and PMLD recruitment in Somerset πŸ›ž

🌍 Accessibility Awareness Day, on the 21st of May, is all about getting people talking, thinking and learning about access and inclusion for people with disabilities. With over one billion people worldwide living with disabilities, accessibility is essential for ensuring everyone can participate fully in daily life and in the wider community.

πŸ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Somerset, accessibility is central to how we support young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) in their own homes and out in the community. For our service users, good access isn’t just helpful β€” it’s essential for comfort, safety and independence.

🏑 Our carers work closely with families to ensure that home environments and community outings are as accessible as possible. This includes supporting safe mobility, helping young people navigate familiar and unfamiliar spaces, adapting activities to individual needs, and ensuring that sensory and communication needs are fully considered.

πŸ“£ We are currently looking for new carers to join our Somerset PMLD in the Community team. This role is ideal for people who are compassionate, reliable and eager to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with PMLD.

πŸ“š Somerset PMLD in the Community – Share a Story Month πŸ“š

🌟 National Share a Story Month, which runs throughout May, is a nationwide celebration of the power of storytelling and reading aloud. This year’s theme is β€œOnce Upon a Storytime”, highlighting how stories bring people together through books, spoken word and shared imagination.

πŸ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Somerset, stories play an important role in how we support young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) in their own homes and out in the community. Whether a story comes from a favourite book, a sensory story bag, or something made up in the moment, storytelling helps to create connection and engagement while also providing comfort.

πŸ“– People with PMLD respond through listening, touch, sound, rhythm or simply enjoying the shared experience. Sensory storytelling is especially powerful, helping them participate in ways that feel meaningful and accessible.

πŸ“£ We are currently looking for new carers to join our Somerset PMLD in the Community team. This role is ideal for people who are compassionate, reliable and eager to make a meaningful difference.

🌿 May is National Walking Month, and while not all of the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support are able to walk, every one of them can still enjoy the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors.

πŸ’› At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Somerset, our community carers love supporting service users to get out into the fresh air β€” whether that’s visiting local gardens, exploring peaceful parks, or enjoying gentle time in nature at places of interest across the area.

🌼 Simply spending time outside can bring enjoyment and relaxation. Fresh air, birdsong, sunlight and familiar outdoor spaces offer soothing sensory experiences that help our young people feel relaxed, grounded and connected.

πŸ€— National Walking Month is a lovely reminder that movement, nature and fresh air can be enjoyed in many different ways, and our carers are here to support each young person in the way that suits them best.

πŸ“£ We are currently looking for new carers to join our Somerset PMLD team. This role is ideal for people who are compassionate, reliable and eager to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with PMLD.

πŸ“’ Why PMLD deserves more research and more voices πŸ“’

πŸ“ƒ People with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) are some of the most vulnerable members of our communities, yet PMLD remains one of the most under‑researched areas in disability science.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬ Researchers themselves acknowledge that knowledge about developmental pathways, communication, sensory processing, and environmental influences for people with PMLD is limited.

❌ Traditional research methods often don’t fit the unique ways people with PMLD communicate and experience the world, which means they are frequently left out of studies altogether.

πŸ€” This lack of research has real consequences. Families, carers, and professionals often have fewer evidence‑based tools to draw on, and society risks overlooking a group whose needs are complex but whose lives are rich with potential, connection, and meaning.

πŸ€— At In Caring Hands (ICH), we see every day how much there is to learn from the young people we support. Their individuality, their ways of communicating, and the relationships they build with our carers show just how important it is for the world to invest more time, attention, and research into understanding PMLD.

πŸ’ͺ Every person with PMLD deserves to be seen, heard, and supported, not only through compassionate care, but through a scientific community that recognises their value.

❓ If you’re a compassionate, UK‑based carer who wants to make a real difference in the lives of young people with PMLD, perhaps you’d be interested in joining the ICH family.

πŸ›‘οΈ ICH supporting the health of young people with PMLD πŸ›‘οΈ

🧑 For the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we support at In Caring Hands (ICH), staying safe, healthy and protected from illness is essential.

🀏 Even small changes in health or environment can have a negative impact, which is why our carers take a careful, personalised approach every day.

πŸ’‰ This World Immunisation Week, 24th to 30th April 2026, we are supporting families to ensure their loved ones with PMLD are up to date with all of their vaccinations.

🩺 Medical appointments can feel overwhelming for people with PMLD, so our carers help by talking through what will happen, practising the steps, and using gentle role‑play to make the experience feel more predictable and less stressful.

πŸ€— These small preparations can make a big difference, helping our service users feel calmer, more secure and better able to cope with the routine healthcare they need.

πŸ“ˆ We are expanding our team of carers. If you’re based in the UK and interested in joining our Somerset PMLD team, we’re looking for people who are compassionate, hardworking and eager to make a real difference.

🫴 ICH supporting young people with PMLD this Stress Awareness Month 🫴

😟 For the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) we care for here at In Caring Hands (ICH), stress can be triggered by changes in routine, sensory overload or communication challenges. Even small shifts in the day can feel overwhelming without the right support.

🌿 During Stress Awareness Month (April 2026), our team of carers at ICH in Somerset is working closely with families to create calm, reassuring home environments where young people feel safe, understood and supported. This includes predictable routines, gentle sensory regulation and communication approaches that reduce anxiety rather than add to it.

🏑 For home caregivers, simple steps like keeping transitions slow, offering familiar sensory comforts and using clear, consistent cues can make daily life feel more settled and secure.

πŸ“ˆ We are expanding our team of carers. If you’re based in the UK and interested in joining our Somerset PMLD team, we’re looking for people who are compassionate, hardworking and eager to make a real difference.

πŸ€— Supporting complex needs with confidence at ICH πŸ€—

πŸ’ At In Caring Hands (ICH), our Somerset team supports people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) through highly personalised home care. Every person we care for has a unique mix of physical, sensory and communication needs β€” and our carers adapt confidently to each one.

πŸ₯° To ensure the best care, we take a completely personalised approach. This includes communication techniques that make understanding as clear as possible, consistent routines that support emotional security, specialist physical care such as safe moving and handling, and close family partnership so families feel heard, supported and involved.

🏑 For home caregivers, the same principles can make daily care calmer and more meaningful: noticing and responding to small changes, keeping communication predictable, and adding plenty of soothing sensory moments throughout the day.

πŸ’™ PMLD & Autism acceptance and support with ICH πŸ’™

πŸ—“οΈ World Autism Acceptance Week takes place between the 31st of March and the 6th of April. At In Caring Hands (ICH), we know how important it is to understand the needs of the young people we support with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and autism.

🌈 Many young people with PMLD have complex sensory needs, communication differences, or autism‑related routines that shape their comfort and wellbeing. Supporting these needs with care and consistency helps them feel secure and valued in their own homes.

πŸ‘€ Acceptance is something we practise every day. It’s in the way we listen, the way we pay attention, and the way we honour each young person’s unique way of engaging with the world.

🌟 Join our team: If you’re based in the UK and want to make a real difference, we’re looking for compassionate people to support young people with PMLD through home visits in Somerset.
