Men’s Health Week: 15th – 21st June

Mental health challenges don’t discriminate, yet many men still find it difficult to talk about how they’re feeling. Sometimes sitting face-to-face and having a conversation can feel overwhelming, but talking often comes more naturally when we’re doing something together.

At Heads Up Somerset, we understand that. That’s why we offer activities such as our Woodwork Workshop and Craft Studio, providing a relaxed, welcoming environment where people can connect, learn new skills, and build friendships. Often, it’s while sanding a piece of wood, sharing a project, or working alongside others that conversations begin to flow naturally.

You don’t have to be experiencing a mental health crisis to benefit. Many of the people who come through our doors are looking for companionship, purpose, confidence, or simply a place where they feel they belong.

This Men’s Mental Health Week, let’s challenge the idea that men should struggle in silence. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

If you, or someone you know, could benefit from support, friendship, meaningful activities, or simply a friendly chat, we’d love to hear from you.

Because sometimes the best conversations happen when we’re busy making, creating, fixing, and doing. 💙

They did it!

After setting off at 8:30am yesterday, Sue and Andy have officially completed their 24-hour Ultra Challenge!

What an incredible achievement. Through sore feet, tired legs and no sleep, they kept going and crossed the finish line together.

They’ve already smashed their fundraising target, but there’s still time to support them if you’d like to:

This morning at 8:30am, our wonderful Dementia Lead, Sue, and her partner Andy set off on their 100km in 24hrs fundraising ultra challenge in support of Heads Up Somerset.

For Sue, this challenge is deeply personal. Earlier this year, she sadly lost her mum, who was a much-loved attendee of our Memory Group. Today, Sue is walking not only to raise funds, but to honour her mum’s memory and celebrate the support, friendship and connection that groups like ours provide to people living with dementia and memory difficulties.

Anyone who knows Sue will know what an incredible member of the Heads Up Somerset team she is. She brings compassion, kindness, patience and genuine care to every person she supports. Whether she’s leading Memory Days, supporting families through difficult times, or simply taking the time to listen, Sue makes a real difference to people’s lives every single day.

We are incredibly proud of both Sue and Andy. They have already exceeded their fundraising target, which is a testament to how highly regarded they are within our community. Every donation will help Heads Up Somerset continue providing vital support to people experiencing dementia, mental health challenges, loneliness and social isolation.

If you would like to support Sue and Andy’s challenge, please consider making a donation:

What a lovely day we had with our wellbeing group today!

The morning was filled with creativity, with everyone enjoying crafts and sewing projects, followed by a delicious lunch together. Afterward, we made the most of the beautiful weather with a gentle walk through the countryside, taking in the stunning views and enjoying each other’s company.

During our conversations, we shared stories about our travels and some of our earliest memories. We even discovered that one member of the group had travelled all the way to Seattle, USA, the furthest destination anyone could remember visiting!

It’s always wonderful to see friendships grow through shared experiences, laughter, and meaningful conversations. Days like these remind us of the importance of connection, staying active, and creating new memories together.

We’re also excited to be planning a summer picnic for the coming weeks, watch this space!

And of course someone found a friendly cat 🐈‍⬛

Please Support Sue & Andy's Incredible Challenge!
Our wonderful Dementia Lead, Sue Edmonds, and her partner Andy are taking on an amazing challenge to raise funds for Heads Up Somerset.

In memory of Sue's mum, Mary, who sadly passed away recently and was a much-loved regular at Heads Up, Sue and Andy will be walking an incredible 100km in just 24 hours as part of the Cotswold Way Ultra Challenge on Saturday 13th June.

They are aiming to raise £1,000 for Heads Up Somerset and are already nearly halfway to their target thanks to the generosity of family, friends, and supporters.

Every donation, no matter how small, will help us continue providing vital support to people across Somerset living with mental health challenges, dementia, and social isolation.
