There was plenty of getting stuck in at our Heads Up Memory Group today, with some of our members helping to make a delicious pineapple upside-down cake!

Cooking and baking are about so much more than making something tasty. Familiar activities such as weighing, mixing, sifting, chopping and decorating can help people living with memory difficulties to maintain fine motor skills, follow familiar patterns and routines, and stay actively involved in everyday tasks.

Our Mental Health Lead Practitioner, Tamsin, also swapped paperwork for an apron and got stuck in alongside the group! One of the things we really value at Heads Up is that, whatever our role, we stay connected to the people we support.

Activities like this create opportunities for conversation, laughter, teamwork and that all-important sense of achievement. We focus on what people can do, providing the right support and encouragement to help our members remain active, independent and connected.

And judging by the finished pineapple upside-down cake, we think the team did a pretty good job!

Today we said a very special goodbye to our wonderful Volunteer Coordinator, Georgina, as she finishes her time with us at Heads Up Somerset.

Carole, one of our Trustees, joined Bridget to present Georgina with a well-deserved thank you and farewell gift, surrounded by some of the people who have been part of her time here.

Georgina has brought so much warmth, kindness and enthusiasm to Heads Up, supporting our fantastic volunteers and becoming a valued part of our community. We are incredibly grateful for everything she has contributed and the difference she has made.

There were plenty of smiles today, and even a few cuddles with our four-legged visitor! đŸŸ

Thank you, Georgina, from everyone at Heads Up Somerset. We wish you every happiness and success in whatever comes next. You’ll always be part of the Heads Up family. 💛

WELLS COMMUNITY, CAN YOU HELP HEADS UP SOMERSET?

We’re looking for local businesses, cafĂ©s, pubs, shops, salons and community venues who would be happy to support Heads Up Somerset by having one of our donation/collection boxes on their counter.

Those loose coins and small donations really can add up, and every penny helps us continue supporting people in our local community through our mental health, wellbeing, memory and outreach services.

Could your business host a Heads Up collection box?

Or perhaps you know somewhere that would be perfect?

Tag a local business below that you think would be up for supporting us, or comment “YES” if you’d be happy to have a box.

We’ll do the rest and arrange getting one to you.

We’d love to see Heads Up boxes popping up all over Wells and the surrounding area! 💚

Thank you, as always, for getting behind your local charity.

Outreach is about so much more than a visit.

Sometimes support looks like helping someone attend an appointment, tackle the weekly shop or manage something at home.

And sometimes, it looks like a swim, a pedicure and a little bit of well-deserved “me time”.

Self-care can play such an important part in our mental health and wellbeing. Getting out of the house, doing something you enjoy and taking time to feel good can help build confidence, independence and connection with the world around us.

Our Outreach Team works alongside each person to understand what matters to them, because meaningful support isn't one-size-fits-all.

It’s about living life, not simply getting through the day.

And judging by that smile, we think the swimming trip was a hit!

Who knew you could do so much with a wooden peg?!

Our amazing tutor Karen, affectionately known as ‘Crafty Karen’ (crafty in the creative sense, not the cheeky one!) arrived with hundreds of wooden pegs and another of her brilliant ideas
and just look at what the group created!

Everyone got completely stuck into this activity, painting, designing and turning simple wooden pegs into some fantastic pieces of art. From colourful wreaths and mirrors to some really personal creations, every one was different.

We even had a Harley-Davidson fan create their very own peg tribute to a motorbike wheel!

The whole group absolutely loved this activity, and it's a wonderful example of how creativity can bring people together, get conversations flowing and give everyone the opportunity to make something they're proud of.

A huge THANK YOU to Crafty Karen for the endless imagination, enthusiasm and amazing ideas you bring to Heads Up. We never quite know what you're going to turn up with next
but we know it'll be good!

Our Memory Group had a very special visit from the fantastic TriShaw, run by an amazing team of volunteers who give their time to help people get outdoors, enjoy the fresh air and experience the simple joy of a bike ride.

A few of our group members were treated to a ride around the beautiful Horringtons, taking in the site of the old West Mendip Hospital, enjoying the scenery and, judging by those smiles and waves, having a brilliant time!

For our Memory Group, experiences like this are about so much more than an afternoon out. They're about connection, conversation, memories, fresh air and continuing to enjoy new experiences together.

A huge thank you to the wonderful TriShaw volunteers for making this possible and for bringing so much joy to our group.

We think the photos say it all!

A huge shout-out to Chris, owner of Wolf Barbers Wells, and our very own Bridget, Heads Up Service Director, following another fantastic Mental Health Hike!

This year’s hike brought people together, got us talking about mental health and, importantly, raised vital funds to support the work we do here at Heads Up Somerset.

But Chris and Bridget aren’t stopping there
...

SAVE THE DATE, Saturday 10th October 2026

These two have one final event up their sleeves, and you won’t want to miss it!

We’ll be revealing more very soon, so watch this space

For now, a massive THANK YOU to Chris and everyone who walked, donated, supported and helped make this year’s Mental Health Hike such a success. Your support really does make a difference.
