Living with a progressive neurological condition has meant adapting to change for Carolyn - but never giving up her independence.

Over the past 20 years, Herts Ability has supported her to keep driving safely and confidently, from switching to an automatic car to learning to use hand controls as her mobility changed.

Herts Ability is delighted to announce the opening of our new outreach site in Leatherhead, expanding access to our specialist driving services across Surrey and the South.

Helping more people gain confidence, independence, and mobility.

Following the closure of QEF, many people faced uncertainty about where they could turn for driving assessments and support. We knew there was a need - and we wanted to help!

From our dedicated new base at Fairmount House, our expert clinicians and approved driving instructors are already supporting people with:

✅ Driving assessments

✅ Passenger assessments

As services ramp up over the coming weeks, we expect to deliver nearly 1,000 additional driving assessments each year, helping hundreds more people maintain their independence, confidence and connection to their communities.

💜 The smiles said it all! 💜

As we celebrate , we’re reminded that confidence, independence and opportunity should be accessible to everyone.

We recently welcomed students from Lonsdale School for a truly special day!

Ten incredible young people got behind the wheel, some using adapted controls, and two even drove directly from their wheelchairs in our specially modified Mercedes-Benz.

The excitement was contagious.

The pride on their faces.

The cheers from their friends.

The sense of achievement.

🗣️ “The smiles, excitement and confidence were incredible,” said our CEO, Sean.

Each student left with a certificate, memories to treasure, and for some, the beginning of their driving journey. Several have already booked full assessments, and we can’t wait to support them every step of the way.

At Herts Ability Driving School, we believe driving is about more than getting from A to B. It’s about freedom, confidence and opening up new possibilities.

That’s why we provide specialist support for learners with additional needs, including personalised assessments with an Occupational Therapist and Approved Driving Instructor, plus adapted vehicles with specialist driving controls.

Rain 🌧️ or shine 🌞… mobility matters! Meet John - a lifelong driver who recently got back behind the wheel with help from Herts Ability! Here’s his story ⤵️

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s and vertigo, John’s mobility became more challenging. Driving, once his symbol of freedom, had to stop... temporarily.

Thanks to a referral from social services, John came to us for a driving assessment. Our kind and supportive team helped him regain confidence and find the right adaptations for his needs - including a hoist to lift his manual wheelchair into his car.

🗣 “Driving means freedom,” John told us.

🗣 “It’s had a huge positive impact on my independence and confidence.”

Now, John’s back on the road - independent, confident, and empowered! 💙
