What is a Business Improvement District (BID)?

It’s a question we get asked all the time, so we thought we’d explain!

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined area where local businesses work together to invest in and improve their town centre.

Here in Welwyn Garden City, Wonderful WGC is paid for by businesses, for businesses. We work on behalf of the businesses that pay for us to deliver an agreed Business Plan, shaped around the 3 priorities and needs identified by the businesses.

So, how are we different from the local authority?

A BID is not the same as the council, and we don’t replace the work carried out by the local authority.

Instead, we provide additionality, delivering extra projects, services, activity and investment that sit alongside what Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council provide.

This can include things such as:

✨ Major town centre events and activities
🌸 Business-funded floral displays
🎄 Christmas lights and seasonal activity
📣 Marketing and promotion of Welwyn Garden City
👮 WGC Watch, radios and business crime support
📱 Digital campaigns and social media promotion
🎓 Training, networking and support for businesses
💡 Investment in projects that improve the town centre
🗣️ A collective voice for the town’s business community

The important thing is that our priorities are set by the businesses that pay for us.

Our small but might team exist to support our town centre businesses, strengthen the local economy, encourage people to visit and spend time in Welwyn Garden City, and help make our town centre a better place to work, shop, visit and enjoy.

In simple terms:

- The council provides its statutory services.
- The WGC BID provides additional investment and activity, funded by local businesses, to deliver the priorities agreed by those businesses.

And that’s what Wonderful WGC is all about.

🌍🍕 TODAY’S TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE TAKES US TO ONE OF OUR BIGGEST EVENTS… THE WORLD FOOD FESTIVAL!

What started with just a few traders showcasing different cuisines has grown into a huge two-day celebration of food, culture and community, transforming Welwyn Garden City town centre into a foodie paradise!

Every year, it gets bigger and better, and it’s an event we are incredibly proud to deliver.

Of course, an event of this size doesn’t just happen overnight! Behind the scenes there is months of planning, logistics and operational work to make sure everything runs safely and smoothly from traders and road closures to waste, infrastructure and everything in between.

But seeing the town centre buzzing with tens of thousands of people enjoying amazing food, discovering our businesses and spending time in Welwyn Garden City town centre makes every minute of the planning worth it!

And this is something that is funded by our town centre businesses and organised by US, the WGC BID.

🗳️ A YES vote from or businesses in our up and coming re-ballot means we can keep the World Food Festival and make it even bigger and better from 2027.

❌ A NO vote means no more World Food Festival in Welwyn Garden City town centre.

This is just one of the many things our businesses make possible by investing in our town centre.

📍 Location: Meet at the Iconic Coronation Fountain for a leisurely wellbeing walk and talk led by Willow.

Gym guest passes available all day at Rise Gym for a donation to Willow Foundation.

TODAY’S TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE TAKES US BACK TO 2024! 🎾🏅

As part of our look back at 10 years of the WGC BID, today we’re heading back to Summer 2024, when our town centre businesses funded and the WGC BID team organised Summer of Sport!

We brought the excitement of Wimbledon 🎾 and the Paris 2024 Olympics 🏅to Stonehills Square, creating a new way for people to enjoy live sport right in the heart of Welwyn Garden City.

This was a particular favourite of mine, mainly because I absolutely loved putting the deckchairs out every morning and then putting them all away again every evening! 😂🪑

But jokes aside, it was fantastic to see people gathering in the town centre, sitting back and enjoying the live sporting action while grabbing a coffee, lunch or dinner from our fantastic local businesses. ☕🍽️

It was a simple idea, but it created a great atmosphere in the town centre and gave people another reason to spend time, shop, eat and enjoy Wonderful WGC.

Just another example of what can happen when our town centre businesses come together and invest in makingWelwyn Garden City a vibrant place to visit.
