Founded by former Arsenal goalkeeper and TV presenter, Bob Wilson and his wife, Megs, Willow is a lasting memory to their daughter Anna, who died of cancer aged 31.Each Special Day provides a positive experience to be shared with a partner, parents,

siblings, children or close friends. To date, Willow has provided more than 17,500 Special Days for young adults diagnosed with a life-threatening condition such as cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s disease.

Every year in the UK, 6,000 men aged 16 to 40 are diagnosed with cancer. Many will face barriers in asking for the help they need.

As part of our ongoing work to support young men living with cancer, we’re aiming to redress the balance in the services we provide, giving more support to this group.

Since the project launched in April 2025 we’re pleased to share that Willow has now delivered 13% more experiences to young men with cancer.

28-year-old Jack from Rotherham, South Yorkshire has received treatment for melanoma. Willow organised a break for Jack and his partner, Natalie, giving them time to relax at Treetops Hideouts in North Yorkshire, while surrounded by nature.

“I am a secondary school teacher and have a passion for helping young people. Outside of work, I love football and golf, as well as spending time with my family and our golden retriever, Ru.

"My diagnosis has massively impacted my ability to work, as well as complete daily activities. My partner and family have been so crucial in getting me through the tough times. Without them, I wouldn't have been able to do it.

"The time away made me and my partner so happy. We loved being able to spend time together with no distractions and it was the first time in as long as we can remember that we truly relaxed both in ourselves and in each other’s company. We didn't want to leave.

"My Special Break has given me lifelong memories and feelings that I will never forget, mainly the happiness and love I felt in my partner's company - thank you for this.”

Our Young Men with Cancer project is delivering more special experiences to people like Jack, helping them seek the support they need and take a moment out when it's most needed.

Marcus and his brother, Joe, ran in the AJ Bell Great Bristol Run for Willow, and raised an astonishing £1115 for seriously ill young adults! Here's their story:

“I'm not a huge fan of running and it's not an activity I normally do. To keep myself truly dedicated to training, I wanted to have something that would hold me accountable.

“The things that Willow did meant that my brother and I could spend time with our mum, away from the hospital, and also that our dad was able to escape from the stresses her illness brought.

"We were so young when our mum passed away but, for me, the Special Days we shared are some of my earliest memories and that just proves how much of an impact this charity has on family and friends of seriously ill young adults.”

We're incredibly grateful to Marcus, Joe and their family for sharing their story and fundraising to help other families create precious memories, just as they were able to with their mum.

The impact of a Special Day lasts far beyond the day itself, and it means so much to see that experience inspire them to run for Willow and support our work. Thanks to their generosity, we can continue creating Special Days for more beneficiaries and their loved ones. 💜

"My Special Day was amazing! Me and my wife had a night away and spa break at our wedding venue from eight years before, which was wonderful. All the happy memories of that day came flooding back instantly."

28-year-old, Karl, from Rotherham, chose to visit Oulton Hall Spa for his relaxing Special Day. It was a chance for him and his wife to be together in such a meaningful place, following two years of treatment.

“We are a family of four - me, my wife and our two sons, who both have autism, so our lives have been pretty regimented to keep them regulated. I have always tried to be active, whether that be the gym, golf, jiu-jitsu or just building anything out of wood.

“My illness really affected the whole family, and being diagnosed with APML (acute promyelocytic leukaemia) four days before Christmas and starting treatment that day was tough. Our lives were turned upside in an instant and the boys especially struggled with me not being at home, which made a hard time even harder as I knew they didn't fully understand where I was.

“That made it very difficult but also gave me the extra drive to get better and get back to them.

“Time is so precious. Memories made are the true gifts in life and Willow's Special Days provide that.”

Stories like Karl's are a reminder that rare diseases do not discriminate, and for young adults navigating a diagnosis that so few people around them will ever understand, being seen and supported can make all the difference.

Willow exists to make sure no seriously ill young adult has to face that journey on their own. Last year alone, 684 young people living with a rare disease received a Special Day, break or treat, bringing moments of joy and connection at a time when they needed it most.

We're so grateful to the Alexion Charitable Foundation for helping make moments like Karl's possible. 💜

On 18 May, Ryan stepped into the boxing ring to raise money for Willow. Here’s his story:

“I stepped into the boxing ring to raise as much money as I can for Willow, and I did this so that the charity is able to carry on the amazing work they have been doing.

"We sometimes take for granted the ability to grow old and create numerous special memories with family and friends. Sadly, for some young adults this isn’t possible. It is a privilege to help Willow give young adults the Special Days they deserve, as a distraction from the challenging realities of living with a life threatening illness and restoring some normality back into their lives.

"If there any tips I would give to help others raise money, it would be to be proud of what you are doing! You are doing it for an amazing cause. Everyone around you will be proud of you and you should be too!

"Tell your friends and family, tell your workplace, tell everyone and let them know that all money raised goes to help amazing people make amazing memories.”

Thank you Ryan, for being so brave and raising money for Willow.

Daisy, who is from Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, lives with Neuro-Behçet's, a rare inflammatory disease. She had a Special Break organised for her and her husband, Alex, at the De Vere Cotswolds Water Park Hotel for their honeymoon. Daisy tells us her story:

“I was diagnosed in November 2024. Unfortunately, I have one of the most severe presentations of my condition, which leads to lesions in the brain and spinal cord.

“The disease causes severe pain and I am a full-time wheelchair user. It also affects my family hugely. My husband has to care for me on top of his full-time job.

“It was important to me that my Special Day included my husband, as carers are so rarely recognised for everything they do. We chose to use our Special Break to have a honeymoon as my chemotherapy drug treatment meant I couldn't travel. We were able to spend four nights in the Cotswolds thanks to Willow's generosity, with everything taken care of.

"To spend time alone as a married couple was extremely special, and we wouldn't have been able to prioritise this without Willow. This break was just what we needed after our wedding, and a trip we will always remember.”

This Carer's Week, we're celebrating every Alex out there. Carers show up day after day with patience, love and unwavering dedication. Whether it's managing appointments, offering support in everyday life, or simply being there, the role of a carer is one of the most important and selfless there is.

We're so proud to have been able to give Daisy and Alex a moment to breathe, reconnect and be looked after for a change, because carers deserve care too.

To every carer reading this, your strength does not go unnoticed. Thank you.
