Why are clinicians rethinking iron deficiency?

Healthcare is constantly evolving. As new evidence emerges and our understanding of the body develops, clinicians are often challenged to reassess long-held assumptions and established approaches.

The current discussion around iron deficiency reflects exactly that.
Across the medical community, there is growing interest in whether traditional approaches to identifying iron deficiency always capture the full clinical picture. This has led to important conversations about the difference between recognised diagnostic criteria and the thresholds many clinicians may use when assessing patients in practice.

These discussions are not about replacing established medicine. They are about continually refining our understanding in pursuit of better patient care.

At The Maas Clinic, we believe thoughtful healthcare requires curiosity, critical thinking, and a commitment to staying engaged with the latest developments in research and clinical practice.

Understanding why these conversations are happening is just as important as understanding the conclusions they may eventually lead to.

At The Maas Clinic, we believe healthcare should be personal.

While our team is deeply committed to providing thoughtful, personalised Functional and Integrated Medicine care, we also value warmth, humour, and creating an environment where patients feel genuinely comfortable and welcomed.

So naturally… this led to a clinic prank involving inflatable costumes, including a unicorn, dinosaur, alien, and flamingo..?😅

As always, Dr Maas, founder of The Maas Clinic and Europe’s leading doctor in Functional Medicine, was a very good sport and quickly joined in on the fun himself.

For over 30 years, our clinic has been built around treating individuals with compassion, care, and humanity. Sometimes that also means sharing a laugh together along the way.

Watch to the end to see Dr Maas’ final costume choice.

Glucose and insulin are closely connected, but they are not the same thing.

Glucose is a type of sugar in the blood that your body uses for energy. Insulin is the hormone that helps move glucose out of the bloodstream and into your cells.

When this system is working well, your body can use energy efficiently. But when cells become less responsive to insulin, the body may need to produce more of it to keep blood sugar balanced. This is known as insulin resistance.

Some signs may include energy crashes, cravings, difficulty losing weight, increased hunger, brain fog, or feeling tired after meals.
But symptoms alone do not tell the full story. Testing can help you understand what is actually happening and what kind of support your body may need.

Swipe to learn more about how glucose and insulin are related, signs that may point to insulin resistance, and what to consider when looking into glucose testing.

Open The Maas Clinic with Dr Maas, our Founder and Functional Medicine Doctor.

Mornings at the clinic are calm, intentional, and full of small details that help the day run smoothly.

That might mean preparing the kitchen and reception area, gathering patient files, checking the schedule, waking up equipment like our Bio-Scan and infrared light, and of course, fitting in a few minutes of infrared light therapy.

Before the first patient arrives, a lot has already happened behind the scenes.

Healthcare should feel considered from the moment you walk in. That starts long before the appointment begins.

Fascia is having a moment, but it is more than just a wellness buzzword.

Fascia is the connective tissue web that wraps around and runs through your muscles, joints, bones, nerves, and organs.

When fascia is healthy, movement can feel smooth, elastic, and supported. When it becomes irritated, dehydrated, compressed, or restricted, movement can feel stiff, sticky, achy, or strangely limited.

And sometimes, what feels like “tight muscles” may actually involve the fascia.

This does not mean fascia is the answer to every ache or pain. Sharp pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain after injury should always be properly assessed.
But if you feel constantly stiff, achy, restricted, or like stretching gives only short-term relief, fascia may be part of the bigger picture.

Swipe to learn more about this lesser-known tissue and why it matters for movement, pain, and whole-body health.

Saunas have become a major part of the health and wellness conversation in recent years, and for good reason.

When used appropriately, sauna may support cardiovascular health, nervous system regulation, circulation, muscle recovery, pain relief, metabolic health, sweating, and general resilience.

But one part of the sauna conversation that often gets missed is this:
women and men may not always respond to heat exposure in exactly the same way.

Hormones, cycle phase, stress load, hydration, blood pressure, and recovery status can all influence how a person tolerates sauna and how often it feels beneficial.

For some women, sauna can feel deeply restorative. For others, too much heat at the wrong time may feel depleting rather than supportive.

As always, it comes back to the individual.

Swipe to learn more about how women may want to think about sauna differently within their health and wellness routine.

Sister Sessions are back — and yes, the giggles came with them.

In this session, Phoenix is helping Phoebe with acupuncture. And because they are sisters, the energy is naturally a little more relaxed than your usual appointment.

Acupuncture can be a useful support for people dealing with muscle tension, sports-related aches, chronic pain, nausea, stress, sleep issues, and more.

It can be helpful for anyone asking a lot from their body - whether you are training hard, working long hours, sitting at a desk all day, moving through stress, or simply feeling like your system needs a bit more support.

Every treatment is different because every body is different. That is why we take an integrated, holistic approach.

These Sister Sessions are a relaxed behind-the-scenes look at treatment between siblings. A regular appointment is always private, professional, and tailored fully to you. 💚

If you’ve ever looked into antioxidants, you have probably come across glutathione.

Glutathione is found in nearly every cell in the body and plays an important role in protecting cells from oxidative stress, supporting immune function, and helping the liver with detoxification.

The interesting part is that your body makes glutathione naturally, but certain factors can affect how much you produce and how much your body needs.

Stress, inflammation, poor sleep, nutrient deficiencies, alcohol, environmental exposures, and illness can all place extra demand on the body’s antioxidant systems.

This can create a bit of a cycle: the body needs more glutathione while also struggling to keep up with production.

Swipe to learn more about how this antioxidant supports detox capacity and what can contribute to lower glutathione levels.
