Who knows, nurture or nature, we women often fall into the trap of pleasing & looking after everyone else first.

Making sure the needs & desires of others are met way before our own.

Our own needs become squeezed in around everyone else - or worse still they become abandoned entirely.

The thing is, if we are always putting everyone else first we may become so disconnected from ourselves that we actually lose all sense of our our needs and wants - let alone our desires.

This is especially true for mums and caregivers but I know I’ve done it even when it’s just been me and (one of my) husbands! I felt it was ‘my job’ to meet his needs & to look after his wellbeing first…and it most certainly wasn’t!

Looking back, I know I abandoned a lot of myself in that period of my life.

So today maybe have a little think.

Where ARE your own needs and wants and desires?

Are they slap bang in the centre of your life, where they belong?

Or are your own needs and desires somewhere on the periphery of everyone else’s?

Are you the centre of your own life?

It’s a really fundamentally important question.

It isn’t selfish to put yourself first in your own life. It’s actually self abandonment not to!

It might be something as simple as you cooking food today that you’d really like to eat (and not the food that everyone else in the family prefers!).

It might be telling the kids to take the bus today instead of you taxiing them.

It might be going for a walk with a friend or a swim & sauna for yourself.

It might be carving out 15 minutes to listen to a nice meditation.

It might be booking that evening pottery class you’ve always wanted to do…or it might even be booking in for a beautifully supportive circle here on the 31st Oct (3 spaces left!) 😉

Whatever you choose to do for yourself. Enjoy it. No guilt.

No need to justify it to anyone else.

This is your life.

It is a gift that won’t last forever.

Enjoy YOUR Friday 💕

Someone told me they’d been feeling suicidal, in fact that they had recently taken steps to end their life.

And I replied that they were certainly not alone. That I felt almost everyone at some point had considered it. I told them that I had. A few times in my life.

In fact, I can remember in the months after I lost my first baby often crossing the road without looking. You could say, a sort of Russian roulette approach to life on my part…which is ironic since I was living in Russia at the time.

For me most people don’t necessarily want to die - they just want the despair or pain to end. And it can seem like a solution. Not an ‘easy’ solution…

Because anyone who has ever attempted su***de will attest that there is, in fact, nothing ‘easy’ or ‘cowardly’ about it…

There is no doubt that this earthly journey can be incredibly hard for lots of souls. That the call home for them can be strong and compelling. But the thing about all human feelings is that they pass.

They aren’t permanent.

Absolutely nothing in life is permanent. That includes the desire to end your life. And often the most helpful thing to be able to say to yourself is ‘this too shall pass’…as many times in a day or in an hour as need be.

And to not take any life ending action before the feeling does actually pass.

We rarely know the depths of someone’s despair before it is too late. But I think we can all be more mindful of the fact that every heart is experiencing something.

And I think we can assume that most people, in some way, be it small or large, are struggling more often than we first imagine.

And that all of us affect each other in ways we may never realise.

The photo here was of a sticker I gave out a few months ago, in the circles I run and in churches where I served spirit. There had been a mistake with the printing. I had ordered just 40 but 120 actually arrived.

So I gave them out after a few services & I asked people to put them somewhere they’d see them each day - so that they be reminded of their worth.

I doubted anyone would.

I never imagined that I’d be told that that sticker was being looked at each morning as part of their daily struggle to choose to stay here.

Though I believe Spirit clearly knew when it gave me all those extra to distribute.

You may perhaps never find out what a seemingly small gesture of kindness on your part has meant to someone in despair.

It might be a genuine smile, a kind word or compliment, the time taken to listen and to be fully present, a hug or a phone call or a helping hand.

Sometimes it only takes a small thing to make a big difference.

Might we all remember that.

Do you know the story of the man who bought a new puppy?

He loved it and trained it and took it for long walks where he would throw sticks - and it would obediently fetch the stick and return it.

One day they were by a loch and he thought he would see what would happen.

After all, they had never been near water.

Would his dog swim out?

So he threw the stick out onto the loch and the dog ran to fetch it. But instead of swimming, the dog ran right across the surface of the water, picked up the stick and brought it back.

The man couldn’t believe his eyes so he threw the stick again and again the dog ran across the water and faithfully returned the stick to him.

What was happening?!!
How could this be?!!
Was he seeing things?

The man decided to fetch his friend and show him. So he knocked at his friend’s door.

‘Ohhh this is your new dog. Isn’t he lovely?’ said his friend.

We wondered if you would like to come for a walk with us by the loch the man asked.

‘Certainly’, said his friend ‘I’ll just grab my coat’.

Shortly after, they were back at the loch-side and as they stood there chatting, the man again threw his stick out onto the water. Again the dog raced across the surface of the water.

The man turned to look at his friend’s face but it didn’t show any wonder or amazement.

Perhaps he hadn’t been watching.

Again the man threw the stick.

Again the dog ran across the water.

The man turned to his friend and said ‘Don’t you see this?!’

And the man looked at the dog as he ran back towards them across the water and said

‘Yeah, your dog can’t swim’.

And I heard that story and loved it!

Because it’s a wonderful reminder that miracles are everywhere in life, but often it’s our own perceptions that stop us seeing the very miracle in front of us.

That miracles that are happening around us and even within us is undeniable.

I was thinking as I was walking through the woods, looking at the beautiful moon, that the moon waxes and wanes, the sun sets and rises each day and we need to do nothing to make that happen.

The breath flows into our bodies, bringing in air and separating it into what our bodies need – in exactly the right quantities.

Our blood is pumped around our bodies by our hearts and we don’t need to do anything to make that happen either.

Our food is digested and the nutrients sent round our bodies and into each cell without us needing to direct any of it.

Our eyes pick up light and shape and our brains create a reality from it.

Our ears, with their tiny hairs, pick up vibrations and our brain creates meaning.

There are thousands of processes and biological events happening simultaneously and all effortlessly just within our own body.

All without intervention or planning.

What a miracle just inhabiting a human body is!

And that’s just the tip of a miracle iceberg.

If you stop to think about it we are surrounded by miracles everywhere we look and yet most people are like the man who says ‘your dog can’t swim’.

But with open eyes and an open heart we can see them everywhere.

Perhaps you might be on the look out for some today.

Lots of people who have come to No55 will have heard me say this at some point:

‘We become really good at what we practice.’

And this doesn’t just apply to our skills, like meditating or hobbies, like fly-fishing - it includes the way we think.

If we habitually practice negative or anxious thinking, it doesn’t just become familiar - it becomes automatic. We get really good at it. And it becomes who we are.

But the chances are that you weren’t born an anxious person or a negative thinker - you’ve just become really really good at what you’ve been practicing.

And if you’d like to change your thought patterns and way of thinking then that too will take practice.

Do you remember when you first learned to drive?

It took absolutely all of your attention to get the biting point, to change gears….but you didn’t stall it a few times and say ‘that’s it, I give up, I’m just not a driver’.

No, you expected it to be a learning process. You stuck at it - and now you don’t even think about it. It’s become automatic.

That’s what practice does.

That’s the same for changing the way you think. It’s going to take consistent practice - but if we consistently practice gratitude, optimism, compassion, and hope, then those too become second nature. They become our nature.

The first step to changing your negative thinking patterns into more positive ones is noticing them.

Every time you catch a negative thought jump on it and redirect it. You might even want to say ‘change, change, change’ just before you replace that negative thought with a more positive one. If you can’t think of a positive thought then go to a happy memory. We all have at least a few of those.

Every time you do this you re-wire your brain towards the positive and you reshape your inner world.

Notice your thoughts, be vigilant, and only lean into the ones that lift you. Replace the negative with positive. Use every chance you can to be grateful and to appreciate your world.

This isn’t about pretending to be happy or positive, this isn’t about dismissing valid emotions in a ‘toxic positivity’ way. This is about taking control of your habitual thoughts instead of letting them control you day in and day out. It’s about becoming aware that you have a choice.

You are not your worries. You are not your doubts. You are the awareness behind them - and can always make a choice what to believe and what to release.

Lean toward the thoughts that lift you, and trust that with dedicated practice you can and will change the way you think.

And you’ll become happier and more peaceful as a result.

12/10/2026

Most of us spend our lives trying to become a better version of ourselves.

We look at our flaws, our mistakes, our insecurities, the things we wish we could change, and we begin to believe that we need fixing.

Some people might even feel that they are broken.

But I don’t believe that. I don’t believe anyone is a problem that needs to be solved.

For me, healing is about remembering who we already are beneath all the layers of conditioning, fear, shame, expectations and all the unhelpful stories we’ve picked up along the way.

We were all born perfect and complete. Our light shining brightly. As a baby we were so close to our spirit home that we shone from the inside with a brightness and clarity.

Everyone who has held a newborn knows this.

Now, it isn’t long until that bright light gets covered over bit by bit - like a lightbulb with a greasy or dusty film covering it 💡.

Parents, teachers, society, everyone around us bit by bit add layers of shame, guilt, expectation, conditions…all dust and grease covering that lightbulb in a thick film and dimming the light we were born with.

I believe that our job now, bit by bit is to wipe away and clean off those layers…till we return to the understanding that we are spirit.

Able to shine bright. In fact, born to shine bright.

The light within each of us has always been there.

As the song goes ‘this little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine…’

You are already whole. You already have everything you need within you. You are pure divine energy, unfolding in your own time & in your own way.

And one of the most beautiful things we can all do is begin to see ourselves differently. To look in the mirror and see more than the things we don’t like. To recognise the beauty in our own humanity, with all its imperfections, contradictions and experiences.

And to see the light of our own spirit within us.

When you’re ready, step into your own beauty. Not the beauty the world tells you that you should have, but the beauty that has always been there.

Be love. Be light. And try to see yourself, and everyone around you, through the eyes of love.

Because beneath all the things we think define us, beneath the labels, the roles, the mistakes and the things we believe make us different from one another, there is something far deeper that connects us all.

And the thing that connects us all is in fact who you really are.

Light.

Sending love,
Ali ###
