🌈👂🏼What does your earwax colour mean?
🟡🟠🟤⚫️🔴🟢⚪️

🟡🟠🟤 This is the normal colour spectrum ear wax is expected to be. Generally newer wax is paler and older wax is darker.

⚫️ Black, solid earwax indicates old and sometimes impacted wax. Wax this colour is unlikely to get rid of without professional help.

🔴 Red or red-stained earwax indicates a current or previous bleeding. It could be simple mild trauma that resolves itself (e.g. if theres a foreign object in you or your child's ear), but get it checked by a professional if you're concerned.

🟢 Green or green-tinged ear wax, or green exudate from the ear indicates a possible infection, especially if it is a bit smelly. Get it checked by a professional.

⚪️ White or very pale earwax generally suggests dry and flakey skin in the ear canal that gets picked up in the wax. This is more common if you have a dry skin condition like psoriasis or eczema.

🌈Any colour of wax can build up enough to cause a blockage in your ear.👂🏾

I always complete a thorough assessment, including relevant medical history, and observe your ear canal throughout the ear wax removal procedure. If I'm not convinced your ears are suitable, I will tell you honestly and advise on next steps; your comfort and health are my priority. ✅️

Microsuction vs Irrigation - which method is best for ear wax removal? 👂🏾👂🏼👂🏽

Let's compare:

💧Irrigation - uses pulsing warm water to soften and flush out the ear wax.

Pros:
Gentle and less invasive
Lower risk of trauma to middle ear skin

Cons:
Higher risk of a short period of dizziness after
Higher risk of infection if ear isn't allowed to dry properly

🪠Microsuction - uses suction to attach to ear wax so it can be removed from the ear.

Pros:
Lower risk of infection as no water involved
Generally quicker than irrigation
Lower risk of dizziness

Cons:
The probe goes further into the ear so higher risk of possible trauma to middle ear skin
Louder than suction, can be distressing

Ultimately the answer is not cut and dry, and a combination of both may turn out to be best for you. Most services offer just one or the other, but I am trained and certified in both, offering a service tailored to you.
