Good to be familiar with these terms. On the surface the definition is clear and precise.

I'd like to share a variation on their interpretation . . .

Kyo and Jitsu are often described as a need and a manifestation of the body's attempts to address that need. That frequently leads to the definition attached.

In practice this dynamic becomes a magical dance between two meridian energies. The dance only begins when the partners are discovered . . .

Sometimes the dance occurs through old habits and conditioning. Two meridians that dance in a familiar way, that is known and safe, often limited, sometimes even harmful. Toes might be trodden on, partners might become frustrated, each with a different tempo.

Sometimes (perhaps during a Shiatsu session) feelings of support, safety, trust, confidence begin to emerge. New meridian partners are discovered. Ones that have never been given a chance to dance together. Jitsu enables Kyo to discover its power. Kyo enables Jitsu to listen, be more receptive. The dance flows freely, ecstatically. Meridians no longer exhibit individuality, they combine and are not limited to their official pathways.

To my Shiatsu colleagues . . . the discussion is now open . . . ❤

Shiatsu vocabulary doesn’t have to be complicated!

During a recent Shiatsu session a client (who has been through the mill of medical investigations) shared how much he appreciated the deep physical touch that was just being and not directing. This reminded me of a (probably misremembered) quote by the Shiatsu teacher Wataru Ohashi . . .*

"Western medicine high tech, low touch. Shiatsu low tech, high touch."

Ohashi's book "Do-It-Yourself Shiatsu" was my first ever contact with Shiatsu (back in the 1980s) and has led me on a beautiful journey that continues and hopefully will continue . . .

*If any of my colleagues are able to correct or enlarge upon my leaky memory their input is most welcome.

Recently spent some time on Barra, an island at the southern end of the Outer Hebrides. I’ve never heard so many cuckoos. They must be pretty motivated to fly right across Britain in order to reach this remote place. Just in case there’s any confusion, the accompanying photo is (I believe) a Song Thrush. The cuckoos were far too elusive, despite singing from first light (4am) to last light (11pm).

🌐An Urgent Call for Unity Across Europe 🌐

A concerning development is unfolding in Greece.

New legislation appears to place Shiatsu and other traditional bodywork practices under a framework designed for “non-therapeutic massage services,” requiring qualifications in aesthetics or physiotherapy rather than recognising the specialised training pathways of established disciplines such as Shiatsu, Thai Massage, Reflexology, Ayurvedic therapies and other traditional forms of bodywork.

This is not only a Greek issue.

Across Europe we are witnessing increasing challenges to the recognition of complementary health practices. Colleagues in Poland have recently faced similar pressures. Many professional communities are finding themselves required to defend their right to practise, despite decades of training, professional standards, ethical codes, and service to the public.

Shiatsu is not a beauty treatment.

Shiatsu is a recognised traditional bodywork discipline with a rich history, a comprehensive educational framework, and professional organisations that uphold standards of practice throughout Europe.

This moment calls for solidarity.

Together we are stronger.

➡️ Please share, engage, and support our colleagues in Greece.
