In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we often use stories and metaphors.

Metaphors can sometimes help us to ‘picture’ abstract concepts. Imagine a feeling of being stuck in life, perhaps an image of coming across a fallen tree blocking your path and then finding a another route that takes you past the obstacle, maybe the views on this new route are rather lovely….

Another reason we use them is that a carefully chosen metaphor creates clarity for our client as hypnotherapy isn’t about the hypnotherapist telling the client what to do. It’s about helping the client find the ‘headspace’ to let their own mind do its magical thing of people finding the perfect personal solutions for themselves.

Perhaps if a person is feeling hurt and sad we might use a metaphor (amongst other things) of a broken vase that’s carefully mended in the Japanese style called Kintsugi, beautifully repairing the vase by glueing each piece back together with precious metals, maybe gold. When the repair is finished the vase is whole, different, and beautiful.

What is stress?

Stress is a response to challenge, change, uncertainty or demand and we have the ability to be stressed to help us cope with difficult situations so, in small amounts, it can even be useful. Stress can help us focus, react quickly, prepare for an exam, meet a deadline or rise to an important occasion.

However when the demands we face begin to outweigh our capacity to cope, because life can become overwhelming at times, maybe because we have been carrying worries, responsibilities or uncertainty for a long time without enough opportunity to rest and recover.

How do we know if we’re too stressed?

Some people describe common experiences, feeling anxious, exhausted, fed up or maybe getting cross about something that wouldn’t normally bother you. The best way to know if you’re too stressed is to remember you are the expert in you, you’re the best judge, trust yourself to know what’s best for you.

Stress is not a sign of weakness, think of it as information.

What might help with stress?

Relaxation skills, mindfulness, time in nature, exercise, talking things through with supportive people and making space for rest can all help.

And if stress is beginning to feel overwhelming, hypnotherapy or mindfulness may be useful ways of helping you reconnect with a sense of calm, balance and perspective.
