☀️ Wishing our UCAN Stroke Rehab family a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend!
Whether you are enjoying a quiet day in the garden, meeting up with family, or simply relaxing, we hope you have a fantastic and restful long weekend.
With a heatwave forecast across the UK, the temperatures are set to soar. Staying cool and safe is incredibly important for everyone, but it is especially vital for stroke survivors. Extreme heat puts extra strain on the cardiovascular system, and dehydration can cause blood to thicken, making your heart work much harder.
Here is our team's quick guide to enjoying the sunshine safely this weekend.
# # # 💧 Prioritise Hydration
* **Drink regularly:** Do not wait until you feel thirsty to reach for water. Keep a glass or refillable bottle nearby throughout the day.
* **Watch the fluids:** Water or diluted squash are perfect choices. Try to limit alcohol and caffeine, as they can speed up dehydration.
# # # 🧊 Keep Your Cool
* **Time your movement:** If you are working on your rehab exercises or going for a walk, plan them for the coolest parts of the day. Early morning or late evening are ideal. Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours between 11am and 3pm.
* **Create a cool indoor space:** Keep windows and curtains closed during the peak afternoon sun to trap the cooler air inside. Open them later in the evening when the outside temperature drops.
* **Use cooling aids:** A damp cloth or cold compress placed on the back of the neck or under the arms is an excellent, quick way to lower your body temperature.
# # # 💊 Mind Your Medications
* **Be heat aware:** Some common post-stroke medications, like diuretics or blood pressure tablets, can affect how your body regulates heat or how quickly you dehydrate. Keep an extra close eye on how you feel.
# # # 👀 Look Out for Each Other
* **Check in on neighbours and friends:** High heat can be exhausting and overwhelming. A quick phone call or text to a fellow survivor or carer to make sure they have enough water and are coping well can make a world of difference.
Have a beautiful, safe, and relaxing Bank Holiday weekend. Take things easy, pace yourself, and enjoy the sunshine safely.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is time to talk about a vital part of stroke recovery that often gets left in the shadows.

When we think about stroke rehab, the focus is usually on physical goals like regaining movement or building up strength. But major UK studies show that your emotional well-being is just as critical to your overall recovery.

It is incredibly common to struggle with your mood after a stroke. Research shows that up to a third of survivors experience post-stroke depression or anxiety. Many people also experience high levels of health anxiety, which is a constant, exhausting worry about having another stroke. This fear can make you feel hyper-aware of every single body sensation and can make you hesitant to practice your exercises or go out.

If you are feeling this way, please know that you are not alone. This is not a personal failure. It is a completely normal medical response to what your brain and body have been through.

A major recent study found that getting psychological support early, especially within the first six months after a stroke, dramatically improves both emotional and physical recovery rates.

Your mental health and your physical rehab are completely connected. When you feel supported emotionally, you gain the energy and confidence needed to keep moving forward with your physical goals.

Here is how you can take a step toward support today:

Talk to your rehabilitation team: Be open about your mood, anxiety levels, or changes in your motivation.

Look into NHS Talking Therapies: In England, you can self-refer online for free, professional psychological support without needing to wait for a GP appointment.

Support the carers too: Family members and carers experience massive emotional strain. They need and deserve psychological support just as much as the survivor.

Recovery is about the whole person, not just the physical body. Be gentle with yourself this month and remember that asking for emotional support is a massive part of staying strong.

Getting Back to Life: The Mechanics of Recovery
When a stroke happens, it is a shock that turns your world upside down. The medical explanation is simple: a blockage stopped the blood flow and damaged the connections in your brain. But living through it is anything but simple.
At UCAN, we look past the patient label. We see someone who needs to find their footing again.
How Your Brain Finds a New Way
The damage from a stroke is real, but it isn’t necessarily the end of the story. Your brain has a natural ability to adapt. This is known as neuroplasticity.
Think of it like this: if a main road is blocked, you don’t just stop traveling. You find the side streets and the back roads to get where you need to go.
Repetition is Training: By practicing specific movements and exercises, you are teaching your brain to build those new "back road" connections.
The ARNI Method: We focus on physical training because movement is the loudest signal you can send to your brain to start rewiring.
Consistency Wins: Recovery doesn’t have a fast-forward button, and it isn't a straight line. It is about the steady, determined work of showing your brain how to move again, day after day.
Act FAST
Minutes matter. If you suspect a stroke, do not wait.
Face: Is one side drooping?
Arms: Can they hold both arms up?
Speech: Is it slurred or strange?
Time: Call 999 immediately.
We are here to help you and your family navigate this mess. We provide the tools and the grounding to help you find your flow and regain the independence that matters most.
What is the one daily task you are most determined to get back to doing?

The Story of the One Percent

We often meet survivors in Merseyside and Cheshire who feel like they are falling behind because their progress does not look like a sprint. The truth is that the brain does not work on a fixed schedule.

Recovery is found in the quiet, gritty moments. It is the first time you grip a cup without thinking. It is that extra inch of lift in your step as you tackle the stairs. At UCAN Stroke Rehab, we use the ARNI (Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury) method because it focuses on neuroplasticity and functional movement. We are not just doing exercises. We are retreading the paths in the brain through task-specific training and physical coaching.

The man in this image represents the reality of the journey. The stairs are steep and the climb is long, but every single step is a refusal to stay still. Whether you are in Liverpool, Halton, Knowsley, St Helens, or across Cheshire, we know that these small wins are actually the biggest victories of all. You do not have to run. You just have to keep moving.
