Reading a spinal scan with Dr. Adam 🩻

Dr Adam takes us behind the scenes of a neurology referral, reviewing a spinal CT and showing the key differences between a normal spine and one affected by a disc extrusion.

With advanced imaging, we’re able to see exactly where the spinal cord is being compressed turning these cases into clear, actionable answers for diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgery.

Behind the scenes of a neurology referral 🧠

This Dachshund was referred to our neurology team after becoming increasingly wobbly. Following a thorough neurological examination and advanced imaging with a CT scan, we identified a spinal disc extrusion at the T12–L1 level.

As the condition progressed to paraplegia affecting the pelvic limbs, surgery was recommended. Our specialist team performed a mini hemilaminectomy, carefully removing part of the vertebral lamina to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord.

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is one of the most common neurological conditions we see in Dachshunds, and prompt diagnosis and treatment can make a significant difference to outcomes.

IVDD is one of the most frequent spinal conditions we see. Many cases are sent to us for advanced imaging like MRI or CT, which helps confirm what’s going on in the spine and guides the most appropriate treatment plan
