💆‍♀️ HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I NEED A MASSAGE? 💆‍♂️

This is something I get asked quite a lot…

“How often should I have a massage?”

And the answer is… there isn't one rule for everyone. ❤️

Your body, lifestyle, work, activity levels and reasons for having massage are all different.

So, how do you know when you might be due one?

✨ Your neck and shoulders are starting to feel tight again
✨ You're waking up feeling stiff
✨ That familiar back ache is creeping back
✨ Your movement doesn't feel quite as free as usual
✨ You're training hard and recovery is taking longer
✨ Your job is physically demanding
✨ You're feeling generally tense, tired or heavy
✨ Stress levels are creeping up and you're struggling to switch off
✨ Or you're simply thinking… “I could really do with a massage!” 😆

⏰ So how long between appointments?

As a general guide:

💛 Maintenance: every 3–6 weeks can work really well.

🏃 Regular training or physical work: around every 2–4 weeks, depending on your workload and recovery.

💪 A specific muscular problem: sometimes 7–14 days initially, then appointments can be spaced further apart as things improve.

🧘‍♀️ Relaxation & stress relief: completely individual. Weekly, fortnightly, monthly or simply whenever you feel you need that reset.

And here's something I think is really important…

You don't have to wait until something hurts to have a massage.

Massage can be part of looking after your body before it starts shouting at you.

But equally, I don't believe everyone needs to be told “you must come back every week.”

A good therapist should look at you, your body and what you're trying to achieve — not just the calendar. 💛

Sometimes your body gives you little whispers before it starts shouting.

Maybe it's worth listening. 🤲✨

💭 I GET ASKED THIS MORE OFTEN THAN YOU MIGHT THINK…

“If you offer relaxing massage, are you really a Sports Massage Therapist?”

And interestingly, I get the question the other way around too…

“If you're a Sports Massage Therapist, can you actually give a really good relaxing massage?” 💆‍♀️

The answer to BOTH is absolutely YES. 🙌

So I thought this was worth talking about, because there can be a few misconceptions around Sports Massage and relaxing massage.

Have a little read… 👇🧡

I'm a Level 4 VTCT qualified Sports Massage Therapist 💪 — but I'm also trained in Swedish Massage, Hot Stones, Indian Head Massage and other therapeutic techniques.

They're different skills — and I've trained in both.

Offering beautiful, relaxing treatments doesn't make me any less of a Sports Massage Therapist.

And being a Sports Massage Therapist doesn't mean every massage I give has to be deep, intense or uncomfortable!

My knowledge of muscles, movement and the body doesn't suddenly disappear when I dim the lights and bring out the hot stones. 😉🔥

Some days I'm assessing movement, working on a specific problem and using targeted Sports Massage techniques.

Other days I'm helping someone completely switch off with a wonderfully relaxing massage. 💆‍♀️✨

And very often?

It's somewhere in between. 🤲

That's where having a broader range of skills really comes into its own.

Some clients come to me because they're training hard. 🏃

Some have muscular aches, tightness or tension.

Some spend all week at a desk and their body is telling them about it! 💻

Some are stressed, exhausted and simply need an hour where they don't have to think about anything.

And some want a massage that's firm and therapeutic while still being relaxing.

I don't believe you should have to fit into a particular box to book a massage — and I don't believe my treatments should fit into one either. 🧡

So please don't be put off by the words “Sports Massage Therapist” if what you really want is relaxation.

And equally, don't see me talking about Swedish Massage, Hot Stones or Indian Head Massage and think “she doesn't really do Sports Massage.”

I absolutely do.

I'm proud of my Level 4 Sports Massage qualification AND I'm proud of the relaxing treatments I offer.

One doesn't take away from the other.

They give me more tools to work with. 🙌

☕🌧️ Grab a coffee... this one's worth a couple of minutes. 💛

Have you ever wondered why you can have a tight neck, aching shoulders or a sore back... even though you've stretched, rested or had a massage before? 🤔

It might have something to do with fascia.

Fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that surrounds and supports your muscles, tendons, nerves and organs. Think of it as the body's internal support network, helping everything move together smoothly.

Over time, stress, repetitive movements, exercise, injuries and even everyday life can leave us feeling stiff, tight and uncomfortable. Sound familiar? ☺️

One of the biggest myths is that massage "breaks up" fascia. It doesn't.

Instead, massage may help the tissues move more freely, improve circulation, encourage healthy tissue hydration and, perhaps most importantly, help calm your nervous system. 👐

When you're stressed, your body can stay in fight or flight mode without you even realising it. Your muscles stay switched on, your breathing becomes shallow, and you carry tension without thinking about it.

Massage sends reassuring signals to your brain through the skin and soft tissues, reminding your nervous system that it's safe to relax. 💛

As that happens, many people notice:
✨ Their breathing slows.
✨ Their shoulders drop.
✨ Their muscles soften.
✨ Movement feels easier.
✨ They simply feel... calmer.

That's one of the reasons so many clients say, "I didn't realise how tense I was until I got off the couch."

One thing I never expect is loyalty.

What I hope to do is earn it. 🫶

Whenever someone comes to see me for the first time, I want them to know there's absolutely no pressure to come back. If I'm not the right massage therapist for you, that's okay. Everyone is different, and every therapist has their own style, techniques and approach. 😊

My goal is simple... ❤️

🌿 To listen to you.🌿 To understand what's going on with your body.🌿 To tailor every treatment to your individual needs.🌿 To help you leave feeling better than when you arrived.

One of the questions I'm often asked is, "What massage do I need?"

The answer is... the one your body needs today. 😊

Before I begin any treatment, I take the time to understand you, not just where it hurts.

✅ How did the problem start?
✅ What movements make it worse?
✅ What makes it feel better?
✅ How long has it been bothering you?
✅ How is it affecting your day-to-day life?

I'll also assess how your body moves because the painful area isn't always the cause.

For example:
🔸 Lower back pain may actually be linked to tight glutes, hips or hamstrings.
🔸 Neck and shoulder pain may be related to desk work, posture, stress or repetitive movements.

Rather than following the same routine for everyone, every treatment is tailored to what I find during your assessment.

My aim isn't just to help you feel better when you leave the treatment room... it's to help you understand why the problem may have developed and how we can work together to keep you moving comfortably.
