Get a free NHS health check at parkrun! 🩺🏃

Local health services will be taking over parkrun next month, with free NHS health checks available to runners and volunteers at Pennington Flash (Saturday 4 July) and Haigh Woodland Park (Saturday 11 July).

If you aren’t already familiar, parkrun is a positive, welcoming and inclusive community that has 5k runs every Saturday morning at 9am all across the world - including Pennington Flash parkrun and Haigh Woodland parkrun.

There’s no time limit and no one finishes last. Run, jog or walk – it doesn’t matter. The focus is on fun and being active.

Next month’s takeover events have been organised by our local Primary Care Networks, with Health First ALW CIC on hand to deliver the health checks to those who want them.

We'll be there too from 8.30am offering health and wellbeing advice, so make sure to say hello! 👋

If you’re new to parkrun, all you need to do is register for a barcode on the official website so you can take part. Link in the comments.

Participants are also asked to wear blue for the takeover events, in tribute to the NHS. 💙

In collaboration with our colleagues across the borough’s PCNs and Be Well Wigan, we’re excited to be taking over parkrun – and everyone is welcome to get involved! 💚

Whether you fancy a walk, jog, run 5K, or volunteer, this free community event is for all ages and abilities. There’s no time limit and no one finishes last 🙌

🙌 Event Feedback 🙌

What a fantastic event it was this Monday in collaboration with Wigan Manbassadors in promotion of Men’s Health Week 2026 💙

The Health First team delivered a large number of FREE NHS Health Checks to all eligible and also FREE Mini Checks to those who didn’t meet the criteria 🩺

The team received some fantastic feedback on the day along with an opportunity of a case study from the event 🤩

It was outlined that many attendees had been invited for their Health Check but didn’t like the thought of a doctor’s setting and felt more at ease having the check in a non traditional setting 💙

A huge thanks to Colin at Wigan Manbassadors, Be Well Wigan and The Prostate Cancer Support team for helping organise and support this great event 👏

We look forward to working on the next one 😁

🌈 Rainbow Sensory Update – The Family Hub at Formby Avenue 🌈

Due to the popularity of Emily’s Rainbow Sensory session, we are pleased to announce that EVERY Thursday we will now be offering 2 session time slots:

🕤 9:30am – 10:15am
🕥 10:30am – 11:15am

We’re hoping these new time slots will help manage numbers better and ensure a calmer, more relaxing experience for both you and your baby 💛

🚶‍♀️ Please note: Bump & Buggy Walk will not be taking place this week due to the changes to the sensory sessions.

Our Carer Wellbeing Dementia Support Group is a safe, welcoming space for anyone caring for a person with dementia to connect, share experiences, and look after their own wellbeing.

With special support from Bev Hunter, Later Life and Memory Service, NHS Greater Manchester Mental Health Team.

The team have been busy Armed Forces Community HQ CIC Wigan this week offering our Full NHS Health Checks 🩺

It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to offer our services to those who have served or currently serving 💙

There is also a scheduled monthly timetable for Health Checks at the Wigan Armed Forces HQ on the following dates 👇

💙 MAY UPDATES 💙

The team have been very busy so far this month supporting a number of local events and offering our services to local businesses and communities 🤩

It was great to see local residents taking advantage of our FREE NHS Health Checks at the Cycle Three Sisters event earlier this month 🚲

The team have also supported St Peter’s Think Ahead sessions and the opening of the Lowton Family Hub which was a huge success last Sunday 🙌

Also a huge congratulations to our Health Check delivery staff who successfully completed the Dementia Friends training session this week and are now Dementia Friends 👏

Thanks to everyone who has supported us and invited us along to events within the borough 🤩

We look forward to working closely in the upcoming months 👏
