“I’m fine”, “it’s ok, don’t worry”, “ I’m ok what are you fussing about”!
How many times have we heard this and we just know it’s not true!!
This was a great bit of work I did with a teen, that uncovered a little of what’s underneath.

DM me if you’d like a parent appointment to find out a bit more of how to see if your child is really fine and if not what you can do 💜

I LOVE doing this session with a child….A little bit of work around feelings and where they come from beforehand, leads so well into this session about how to be brave and face your fears! 💜

Parents, often of teenagers, ask me how to connect more with their children. These type of card games are really good just to have by the dinner table, take on holiday etc. The questions are really insightful into how your child perceives the world, how they value themselves, how resilient they are and the added bonus is they get to hear things about you on. There are loads of these card sets around-I often use them with the children I see đź’ś

Always nice to do something kind for a friend đź’ś
Every time something positive happens she can write it on a little wooden heart, pop it in the pot and then on those days where negatives thoughts start creeping in she can read some of the positives!! Makes it so much harder for those pesky negative thoughts to stick around!!

Shyness can be a beautiful strength… just talking about it and exploring how it feels and helping a child to use it as a helpful tool but to be able overcome it if they want to is so powerful for that child💜

I went to an excellent talk about children becoming “ risk averse” at Cheltenham Science Festival last week.
Excellent speakers discussed the shifts in how children experience risk now.
Children are very protected from what is seen as a scary world and this is resulting in them fearing taking a risk. This is a shift in the behavioural patterns seen years ago.
Children are now presenting as much more anxious about things that previously wouldn’t have been seen as fearful. For instance going on a school trip, starting a new club/class, sleepovers, sleeping alone or making their way to high school on public transport.
This can lead to even smaller things being tricky too-tackling a hard maths question, speaking in assembly, dealing with a change of routine such as “ World Book Day” , change of teacher for the day.
This leads to adulthood where a certain amount of taking a risk is inevitable-going to University, applying for a new job, learning to drive, travelling the world.
So how can we allow children to develop their risk tolerance so they fear the world less? Much of it depends on our attitude to risk as parents-what language do we use that they hear- “ be careful”, “ that might not be safe” etc. How do our children see us assessing risk, or taking a risk?
Encouraging them to safely take a risk, to consider options, problem solve, know their capacity and trust in their abilities will really help. Enable activities that gently allow some element of risk -so they can see they CAN ….it will really pay off!! 💜
