I climbed a mountain before dawn once, a long time ago now. It was Adam's Peak, in Sri Lanka, when I was nineteen.
We walked up in the dark, and just as the light broke over the rainforest, the birdsong rose to meet the sun rise. I remember the thousands of melodies, all at once, as the whole forest was waking up at once but all was covered in this cloud.
Something in me opened that I can only call heaven.
I still feel it. In a way, I am still climbing the mountain, but internally.
Ten years after this I began to learn about the breath. And this has been one of my favourite tools to get me up the mountain faster and easier.
