Back Mobility - Part Five

And finally... a little gentle selection that I've been promising for a while. So many of you wake up with a tight stiff lower back. Currently I'd include myself in that category; so this is a short set I often do before even getting out of bed, to gently ease my spine into the morning... or any time you need it.

Mobility May... done!! 😘😘😘

Back Mobility - Part Four

Every so often I come across a verbal cue that really resonates... of course the acid test is when i share it in class (I know pretty quickly from the facial expressions, how well its landed). And last week it was all about bendy straw, which I think on balance, landed better than most.
So when we enter into lateral spine flexion now (aka side bends like Mermaid), imagine your spine is a bendy straw; and instead of letting it collapse concertina-style on the side your leaning towards, first stretch the straw out and keep both sides lengthened as it bends. Genius!

Back Mobility - Part Three

Spine Rotation.. without it there would be no doing the twist, no golfers swing and no skimming stones at the beach (now THAT would be tragic!). With far more range in the neck (cervical) and chest (thoracic) parts.. today's moves beautifully work through my favourite plane of back mobility.
These two are regular class favourites with good reason, but go steady; and I will show some versions later in the week.

This weekend wasn't what we'd planned...
We were supposed to be hiking, paddle boarding and camping in the Lake District. And as it got closer and the forecast actually looked to be on our side; so I was busy mapping out walks and dreaming of ticking off new fells. But then I hurt my back. And the disappointment threatened to crush me a little.
But if theres one thing my family is good at.. it's a pivot (Ross and Chandler with a sofa, take note).
A last minute bargain booking to the Gower (totally uncharted territory for us all) turned out to be such a gift.. perhaps the pace and relaxation we needed all along. And what a place to begin to discover.
Because sometimes... while you're busy striving for one thing, you need something quite different and it can show up in the most unexpected way.
So thank you bad back... kind of.... 😘😘😘

Back Mobility - Part Two

Back extensions... my nemesis for so many years; until Pilates taught me how to do them safely and well. 💕💕💕
The set up is critical... and this is them in their most stripped back form (I'll post a seated version separately if lying probe is not for you - including a seated version of yesterdays back flexion). As the basis for several other key Pilates moves - they are often the key to strengthening our posterior chain and reducing poor posture. But definitely go steady... the usual rules are really key here and listening to your lumber spine throughout to avoid pain and strain.

Back Mobility - Part One

The irony of recording my spine mobility series last week, just after pulling a load of tendons in my lower back, was not lost on me. But then, perhaps that was exactly the light touch and empathy needed. Literally climbing into the problem and feeling my way to stretches and movement that felt good and soothing; and more importantly would be achievable for many of you who are struggling.
Childs pose is always my first thought at the merest hint of a spasm; here with some gentle alternatives to play with. Go steady!

If you know me, you know I love to overshare.. 😘

Someone commented yesterday that I should do more video content as talking to the camera seems to come pretty naturally to me..................................... 😂😂😂

I may or may not have spluttered my water at her.. and felt compelled to share the outtakes. I reckon on average it takes 8-10 attempts and most end in me blowing raspberries or swearing..

Knee Mobility - Part Four

Twisting the night away may sound like a lot of fun.. but unless your knee has some half decent rotational mobility (and at the same time not too much) it can land you in a lot of bother. In my case, post pregnancy (15yrs ago) too much instability led to a major tear, but too little is also one of the most common reasons for sporting knee injuries (think sudden changes of direction).. so these moves are well worth investing a couple of minutes of your time. Go steady as always!

Knee Mobility - Part Three

Did you know your kneecap (patella) can move? This one may feel a little strange to start with (the faces that are being pulled in class doing this are pure comedy! 😂) Definitely take it gently; but gently moving your knee cap around (side to side or up and down) can be great for a stiff patella (knee cap), tight ligaments around the knee cap, and can also help to reduce painful fluid build up in that area. If on the other hand your knee cap feels too easily moveable (feels loose) this can be problematic and is worth having checked by a physio as this could indicate issues with the supporting ligaments.

NB. These stretches are designed to be gentle and are generally safe and comfortable for most people, but do not take the place of medical advice. For any undiagnosed or new pain, or following an injury, please do seek advice from your GP or physical therapist, before undertaking these stretches.
