Hazel Shaw Independent Speech and Language Therapist Specialist Independent SaLT working in and around Worcester. I am a paediatric Speech and Language Therapist working in and around the Worcestershire area.

I have over 25 years experience and specialise in working with children with speech sound difficulties, including cleft palate and Childhood Apraxia of Speech. I am registered with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists as well as the HCPC. I have over 20 years of experience in the treatment & management of a broad range of communication difficulties. I specialise in working with children with stammers or speech sound difficulties, including Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia and cleft palate. I have a fun, friendly and approachable style and aim to help children fulfil their potential through engaging activities. I offer the flexibility to see children at home with parents, at school with support staff/teachers or via Zoom. My prices are competitive, but also reflect my specialist skills and experience. I don’t advertise my business beyond this page, as I am a strong believer in personal recommendations, which is where the majority of my work comes from. 🐾 Input modelling is so much more fun with a cat! 🐱💕

The aim of input modelling is to provide children with clear, accurate models of speech sounds, without any pressure or expectation for them to copy.

By leaving deliberate pauses, we also create natural opportunities for children to have a turn and attempt a sound if they choose to.

And with Maisy, my therapy cat, joining in, it becomes a lovely multisensory input modelling experience! 🐾

Children can listen to the speech sounds being modelled whilst enjoying the added sensory experience of giving Maisy an occasional stroke.

Who says Speech Therapy can't be fun?! 🐱💕

I am not ashamed to say I cried whilst watching this! Mikey's Wish Foundation have done phenomenal things to raise awareness of CAS and access to specialist Speech and Language Therapy. I no longer feel like a small voice standing up for what I believe in so passionately - as you'll hear me say in a section of this video. Very proud to be a part of this and so honoured that my years of experience and dedication to speech disorders has been recognised. Please watch.

I put so much energy, thought and enthusiasm into every therapy session, so hearing that a child has not only made fantastic progress but has loved coming to see me means everything.

And of course, lovely Maisy 🐈 gets a special mention! 😂

🎤 Sometimes, all it takes is a little bit of fun! 💕

I'm always on the lookout for new toys and resources to support children's speech and language development and my latest investment - a Mi-Mic echo microphone - has definitely been a winner! 🎤

This little girl has been having great fun experimenting with the sounds it makes and it's been fantastic to see just how motivating it's been for her!

What started out as having fun listening to sounds during input modelling activities (where I model accurate speech sounds with no pressure or expectation for the child to copy) soon developed into something more!

She became so interested in the funny echo that she began choosing to experiment with sounds herself, imitating my productions and even attempting sounds she hadn't made before. 💕

What I particularly love about this video is how her accuracy improves with practice and support.

Watch how she initially produces an 'ooo' sound when I model /m/. But when I get down to her level and gently draw her attention to my mouth, she watches carefully and then produces a beautifully clear /m/! ❤️

It's a great reminder that speech therapy doesn't always need complicated resources. Sometimes a fun little microphone, the right support and a child's own curiosity can create some really valuable opportunities for learning.

Once again, I'm looking slightly dishevelled and getting ridiculously excited about a single speech sound... but that's pretty standard for me! 😂

💙 A lovely afternoon at Perrywood Primary School! 💙

You might remember that a little while ago, I offered a FREE Speech and Language Therapy session to a local school.

Perrywood Primary were the first to get in touch to snap up the offer and this afternoon I had the pleasure of visiting them! 😊

From the moment I arrived, I was made to feel so welcome. It was such a pleasure spending time with the children and staff, sharing ideas and working together to support children's speech, language and communication skills.

A huge thank you to everyone at Perrywood Primary for such a warm welcome. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the afternoon with you! 🥰

I'm so proud to have been included on the Mikey's Wish Foundation / Mikey's Wish - Verbal Dyspraxia Awareness website as one of just three UK Speech and Language Therapists listed as specialising in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).

CAS is an area of Speech and Language Therapy that I'm so passionate about and I absolutely love working with children and their families to help them develop their speech.

Those moments when something finally clicks, after so much hard work, are incredibly rewarding!

It's lovely to receive this recognition from a charity that does such fantastic work raising awareness of CAS and supporting children and their families. 💙

You know you’re a Speech Therapist when…

You’ve worked long days, finally sit down to switch off and watch Despicable Me 4… only to spend far too much of the film distracted by one of the characters, Poppy and her lisp!

I could clearly hear an interdental /s/ and /z/ (tongue between the teeth)… but annoyingly, the animation showed her making /s/ with her tongue behind her teeth! 🤦‍♀️

Apparently my Speech Therapist brain does not have an off switch! 😫😂

Anyone else completely unable to stop analysing things related to their job, even when they’re supposed to be relaxing?! 🙄

I absolutely love my visits to schools further afield - I’m always so grateful for how kind and appreciative they are that I travel so far to work with their children. 💚

Today, though, the travelling didn’t quite go to plan! I was supposed to be at a school I love working in in Bushbury, Wolverhampton. What is normally around an hour’s journey was already showing as an hour and a half and as I set off, the arrival time kept getting later rather than earlier! With the motorway then closed, I eventually had to admit defeat and turn around. 🚗

Not one to waste an unexpected gap in the day, I made good use of the time catching up with admin and getting lots of lovely therapy resources laminated and ready to go. ✂️📚

After today’s travelling adventure, I’m particularly looking forward to tomorrow’s school visit… which is close enough for me to walk to! 😁

Tomorrow’s commute is definitely going to feel a little different! 😂

A little glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes! 💚✂️🐱

I seem to have two Speech Therapy Assistants today!

My son Harry has been a brilliant help with all the cutting and laminating… while therapy cat Maisy has been keeping a close eye on proceedings! 🐱😂

There’s lots of preparation behind every therapy session - planning activities, making resources and thinking about what will work best for each individual child.

I also try to provide practical resources for school staff and parents to use between sessions, so children have plenty of opportunities to practise their skills outside of their time with me. 💚
